Thank you for introducing this. It’s about time that this injustice is rectified, and I hope that this gets out of Committee and before the Senate for a vote!
Once again we see this bill introduced and probably to no avail. Instead continue to give my hard earned money and benefits to illegal aliens and malcontents who serve(d) no purpose in this country other than to drain its resources. Thanks for trying anyway!
I believe that this legislation in unfair in that only fifteen states are affected by this WEP legislation. In all fairness if you consider that a person working for a state municipal or county and is contributing to a pension program, in essence that retirement is totally different from the social security program. These two retirement programs do not come from the same pocket. If I had an IRA in two different banks, what this legislation does is that although I contributed to both IRA’s, I would be able to collect only one !!
Please get this bill approved. WEP and GPO penalize those who are changing careers from private to public service.
This bill needs to be passed. Although I’m nominally a Republican it is disturbing to see the lack of Republicans who have sponsored this bill. While throwing money at everyone else, we retirees see our 401Ks shrink and interest on our CDs approach zero. This at least will give some relief to persons like my wife who worked hard to earn and contribute to both her UK and US retirements and have her retirement funds called a “windfall”!
this bill needs to be forced out of committee. It appears that the co-sponosrs feel they can do this safely and never have to confront a real vote. Many of us who worked for a short period of time in a non-contributory system are being very heavily penalized. My guess is that the adjustment in Social Security costs would be minimal if the bill were passed.
Do the fair thing. Repeal WEP and GPO.
I worked for the government as a civil service employee under the old retirement system for 37 years, retired and worked to earn my 40 quarters of social security. I realize my social security would be small but it really upsets me when I see someone who sat home for 37 years, earned 40 quarters and lose nothing when I lose so much of my social security just because I have a retirement check. What’s the difference in a federal retirement check and someone getting food stamps, reduced lunches for their kids, and on welfare. Something isn’t fair, who pushed this through anyway.
This bill is introduced EVERY YEAR and touted by it’s many cosponsors. The politicians who sponsor and cosponsor this bill along with union leaders brag to their constituents how they are fighting to get this bill passed. It is all political BS. This bill gets read into the record and is immediately sent to committe to DIE. The politicians know it will die in committe before they take turns every year sponsoring it. They will come back and tell you how hard they fought for the bill. They are LYING. One of the reasons SS is in trouble is because when Bill Clinton’s Welfare Reform went into effect all the professional welfare recipients went into SS Disability. You would not believe how many people are collecting SS disability who never worked claiming bad backs, asthma, learning disability & other nonsense. Your chances of winning the Lotto are better than this bill ever getting passed & signed. Call out the sponsors of this bill and tell they you know they are LIASRS!!!!
This bill needs to pass. Those who paid into SS and who have their 40 quarters verified should be the ones who receive SS. Fair is fair!!!!!
I can only weigh in on all the above comments as in total agreement. As a young man out of high school I worked for 11 years to acquire my 40 plus quarters before starting a career in law enforcement. Now all fire and police are being penalized for choosing a profession that protects those very individuals that fail to see the unfairness of the current law. If this bill isn’t finally enacted, then shame on you.
It is my understanding that this bill has been introduced on several occasions but has never gone to a vote in either house. What do we need to do to get this gross injustice rectified. I have put into social security for close to 37 years and to be told that I will receive a drastically reduced ss pension because I am a teacher. I have had to work part-time because I was a teacher who needed to work second jobs to support my family.
What can we do to get this out of committee??
Since the congress and senate staff is effected by this why don’t they do something about it???
Because I worked for the county, I can’t draw any SS and I will have to pay for my Medicare coverage – so while others can have their medical coverage deducted from their SS benefits, I will have to write a check each month. What is fair about that???
I am in agreement. This goes before committee and then nothing is done….and the voters are duped again. Do not vote for your congressman unless they endorse and then do something to force this out of committee and up for a vote. They are never going to do it unless they are forced to by voters.
I worked under Social Security for 15 Years before going to work for the United States Postal Service. I worked there for 23 years before retiring in 2003. I have since went back to work under Social Security for the past 6 years, paying my share again into the Social Security Fund. In April 2010, I will be at age 62. Now I find out that I may get little if any of my Social Security. How fair is that? I receive a reduced Civil Sevice Pension because of my minimal years of service. I was really counting on my Social Security. I may have to work forever if this bill does not pass.
We need to pass this Bill for all the hard workers that payed into the Social Security Fund for years and will get little if any of ther Social Security in return.
