Just looking at who co-sponsored this bill tells me it is not a good idea.

With so many people fundamentally opposed to the practice, and with so much private interest in the research, is it really that important that we have to fund it with money extracted from those who hold such strong moral and ethical convictions against it?

TO ikinya6 : Here is a Response from one of our founding fathers:

“To compel a man to furnish contributions of money for the propagation of opinions which he disbelieves and abhors, is sinful and tyrannical.” – Thomas Jefferson

Part of this abhor able bill S.487:

‘SEC. 498E. ALTERNATIVE “HUMAN” PLURIPOTENT STEM CELL RESEARCH.
    (2) prioritize research with the greatest potential for “near-term” clinical benefit; and

Great quotes and I whole heartedly agree…this is as bad as forcing me to help murder someone. I am against it and should not have to participate monetarily or any other way!!!

sorry i not for this at all.

  • bear 03/24/2009 2:18pm

With the possibility of ISP (regresses adult cells back to stem cell-like states) technology completely replacing the need to harvest any stem cells, I would prefer that we take that route.

My sentiment exactly. It’s too much to ask the current administration not to exploit this matter purely for political gain. There is no real scientific benefit anymore. There’s a reason why their mascot is a jackass.

Things are getting way out of hand with our gov’t. They are not listening. We have got to MAKE them hear us! Any suggestions? I write my congressmen almost daily and I get an automated response email or letter. I’m sick of this! Is anyone else as tired as I am? It seems that others are speaking out as well with no response. Our gov’t officials are supposed to work for us! I am attending a ‘TEA Party’ on April 15th but who’s to say that will work? I think we need a revolt! If everyone in America stopped paying taxes would they listen? I think they would have to! We could all claim married and 9 and then refuse to pay. I don’t think that is unAmerican. I think it is revolution in its greatest, loudest form! What do you all think???? They can’t arrest the entire nation! Can they?

Every day we find ourselves, like kqotjesus2001, saying “Things are getting out of hand”. No, our publicly elected officials are NOT listening. That is the way with Dictatorship Government. The more opposition, the better they feel. It shows absolute control when every voice is opposed to the “rulers” ideals.
Obama has the “poor”, illegals, unions and anyone that is too lazy to work eating out of his hands. It’s going to be a struggle, but in November of next year, VOICE YOUR OPINION AT THE VOTING BOOTH! DO NOT vote for the incumbent! Vote for new blood! It is time to get these LIFE TIME GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS OUT OF OFFICE. I know, because I live in Nevada and Harry Reid is a pain in my behind! I love my country and I am sick and tired of seeing it downgraded by the likes of Harry, Nancy and Obama.

I agree that we need to Voice our Opinion at the Voting Booth. There is just something I would like to add:

Any person running for office, probably not: “One of The Washington Elite” and needs to state his or her support for the U.S. Constitution and our Republic government, a government “for the people”, “by the people”. Acknowledging they are hired by the people, “citizens” of The USA. They need to answer direct questions with a direct and truthful answer, questions asked “by the people”. Then living up to this!

I for one, am Very Tired of “so called, pretty, prewritten speeches and prewritten answers to questions, that don’t even answer the questions asked”! and “all campaign $$$” to that person should be fully and completely exposed by them, so we know what Huge Conglomerates are going to pressure them to do things once they are elected.

I understand the moral or ethical concerns, but I disagree with their being used to justify opposition to this kind of legislation.

The ethical concerns here are too little too late. These embyros (sorry to say) have already been abandoned; they are already ‘dead’.

This money not only funds explorations into the application of embryonic stem cell research, but could also fund research into replacements for embryonic stem cells in each of these applications.

We will never find suitable alternatives if the original is not pursued. We will never know what life-saving applications are possible (and thus which can be acheived by alternate means) unless the stem cell research is allowed to go forward in a fashion unencumbered by funding limitations.

Furthermore, allowing federal funds to support embyronic stem cells also allows the federal government to regulate their development and use in research environments.

JACKO – that is exactly the point….abortion is MURDER pure and simple!!! and last time I checked murder was still illegal or is that changing too.

  • MercilessPit 04/25/2009 10:34pm

I’m not so sure that abortion is murder, that question is inherently religious in nature and religious ideology should be kept out of law, however, late-term and/or partial birth abortion is most definitely murder in my mind.

But as jackowire said, the argument is too little – too late by the time the embryo is already killed. Why oppose using the stem cells that would otherwise be basically thrown in the garbage?

A similar scenario on the opposite end of the spectrum would be: If a convicted murderer that has a strong healthy heart is put to death by a sentence imposed by the courts, and a heart transplant patient can use that heart, should we deny that patient a second chance at healthier life and deny him the transplant because of the source of the organ in question? No, and we would be ignorant to do so.

  • MercilessPit 04/25/2009 10:34pm

It’s not like people are saying “kill the embryo to harvest the stem cells”, what they ARE saying is “stop stagnating advancement of medical technology that could potentially help millions of people”. Why anyone is against that is beyond me, unless they would rather see people that could be healed with such technology suffer and/or die instead.

Don’t get me wrong, I believe in adoption instead of abortion, that is the responsible approach to the conundrum. But until abortion is made illegal out-right, we should use those otherwise wasted stem cells for the betterment of humanity.

    Not just NAY, absolutely NAY!!!

  • jlminer 07/06/2010 11:16am

if you truly believe that doing research on embryos that will be discarded is murder – then why aren’t you upset about the act of discarding the embryos? why are you not pushing to have the ones discarding them charged with murder? we can obtain so much insight into health/medicine/life by using these otherwise unused embryos and you’d rather stop it simply b/c you are using religion as a basis for how we should do scientific research. these embryos are not created for research purposes. they are created and then thrown out. i fully support using discarded embryos for scientific research in hopes of curing the world’s worst diseases.
