You & me both
I agree 100%
Its not something that can be tied to one party. Both major parties want this, and in fact the Repubs are generally more careful about how they approach it.
This is Agribusiness at its’ worst, using political leverage in an attempt to kill consumer-driven Agriculture.
I can’t find any part in this bill that specifically prohibits individuals from planting their own personal crops. Even if they did, I sure as hell would continue to plant my tomatoes and flip off “da man.”
Where is there any mention of a takeover of family farms? You must be reading a different bill.
Much of this bill is already in place in the meat and poultry industry and as a person with more than 18 years of exp. There’s been talk for a number of years about combining the USDA and FDA-I think that would reap tremendous benefits for all.
If you had even a passing knowledge of socialism and the contents of this bill, you’d know that what you just posted was completely ridiculous.
All this whole foods/organic thing is very popular with a lot of liberals. I’m really surprised the Democratic Party would be the primary supporters of something that will cripple this industry (or at least raise prices which are already expensive). This will hurt people who are trying to gain access to Non-GMO and organically-grown food because they’re tired of being poisoned. Looks like the party of helping the poor has turned into the party of Big-Business and Centralized Government Rule. Maybe the Tea-Party could help out a brother who just wants the freedom to buy some frikin food of his choice…
Truth: The fatty acids found in artery clogs are mostly unsaturated (74%) of which 41% are polyunsaturated.(Lancet 1994 344:1195)
Myth: Vegetarianism is healthy.
Truth: The annual all-cause death rate of vegetarian men is slightly more than that of non-vegetarian men (.93% vs .89%); the annual death rate of vegetarian women is significantly more than that of non-vegetarian women (.86%vs.54%) (Am J Clin Nutr 1982 36:873)
Myth: Vitamin B12 can be obtained from certain plant sources such as blue-green algae and soy products.
Truth: Vitamin B12 is not absorbed from plant sources. Modern soy products increase the body’s need for B12.(Soybeans:Chemistry & Technology Vol 1 1972)
Myth: For good health, serum cholesterol should be less than 180 mg/dl.
Truth: The all-cause death rate is higher in individuals with cholesterol levels lower than 180 mg/dl (Circulation 1992 86:3:1026-1029)
You and me both, plus I can-up what food I grow so have them when times are lean and they will be. http://www.survivalseedbank.com/
This administration is completely out of control, especially in trying to enact this type of bill. The title of this bill is very misleading and has nothing in the world to do with food safety and has everything to do with the control of our food production and supply. This is very scary indeed and to think our government reps are dumb enough to even consider this is just incomprehensible.
You can’t have both. A 500K max is pathetic in relation to total receipts.
It does not present a one-size-fits all approach at all. It’s so broad, it can mean anything you or I want it to say or interpret it as.
It will however vastly empower corporatist food production. Remember, the new food czar is the X Monsanto VP of Public Affairs…. Dare we track the money trail on this bill and it’s supporters.
This bill kills biological diversity. Big seed producers like to make sure their seeds don’t product little babies so farmers can store and plant in the following year. They also like to make sure that their seeds only react to a certain type of weed and pest spray. We will be forced to eat test-tube food, one of a kind in biochemical structure, patented and highly contagious to other natural seeds slowly eroding what was at one time nature.
Keep up the great work at your union.
One of the worse bills to come around in the past 6-months. If you support this in any way shape or form, you are uninformed, can’t read or are a paid blogger.
The new food czar is the X VP of Monsanto’s Public Affairs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

- FDA/DHS? Sound like someone is losing ground and it’s the family farms.

- Like ObamaCare, we need to sign the bill to see what will happen

- So the big guys will be exempt from the bill while it crushes little farms.

Another take over by our wonderful socialist government. Gosh I am so happy we are socialists now. I just wouldn’t know what to do without the government telling me how to live my life. BULL CRAP
You don’t see anything about being unable to grow your own food because there isn’t anything.
People read things on blogs and then take them as truth rather than opinion. Sometimes opinions then get spread to other blogs as reference and then to actual news sites because people fail to research where information comes from.
Here is a hint: Just because it says ‘news’ in the name or url doesn’t mean it is real news.
Example of what lobbyist money can do-!!!
It is supposed to be a safeguard for food quality – what it REALLY is is just another layer of government control at the expense of the people. It puts the small & organic farmer in a precari…ous place- and give the FDA too much authority . These guys @ the FDA do not have a clue about nutrition – they are still talking the " lowfat’ lipid theory that has fueled obesity , cancer, diabetes , arthritis etc by removing the traditional fatty acids and fat soluble vitamins from our diets.
In my book we need to be headed in the opposite direction from the FDA to stay healthy—
Examples-Myth:Heart disease in America is caused by consumption of cholesterol and saturated fat from animal products.
Truth: During the period of rapid increase in heart disease(1920-1960) American consumption of animal fats declined but consumption of hydrogenated and industrially processed vegetable fats increased dramatically.(USDA-HNI)
Myth:Saturated fat clogs arteries.
Myth: Animal fats cause cancer and heart disease.
Truth: Animal fats contain many nutrients that protect against cancer and heart disease; elevated rates of cancer and heart disease are associated with consumption of large amounts of vegetable oils.(Fed Proc July 1978 37:2215)
Myth: Children benefit from a low-fat diet.
Truth: Children on low-fat diets suffer from growth problems, failure to thrive & learning disabilities.(Food Chem News 10/3/94)
Myth: A low-fat diet will make you “feel better and increase your joy of living.”
Truth: Low-fat diets are associated with increased rates of depression, psychological problems, fatigue, violence and suicide.(Lancet 3/21/92 v339)
Myth: Low-fat diets prevent breast cancer.
Truth: A recent study found that women on very low-fat diets (less than 20%) had the same rate of breast cancer as women who consumed large amounts of fat. (NEJM 2/8/96)
Myth: The “cave man diet” was low in fat.
Truth: Throughout the world, primitive peoples sought out and consumed fat from fish and shellfish, water fowl, sea mammals, land birds, insects, reptiles, rodents, bears, dogs, pigs, cattle, sheep, goats, game, eggs, nuts and milk products.(Abrams, Food & Evolution 1987)
Myth: Coconut oil causes heart disease.
Truth: When coconut oil was fed as 7% of energy to patients recovering from heart attacks, the patients had greater improvement compared to untreated controls, and no difference compared to patents treated with corn or safflower oils. Populations that consume coconut oil have low rates of heart disease. Coconut oil may also be one of the most useful oils to prevent heart disease because of its antiviral and antimicrobial characteristics. (JAMA 1967 202:1119-1123; Am J Clin Nutr 1981 34:1552)
Myth: Saturated fats inhibit production of anti-inflammatory prostaglandins.
Truth: Saturated fats actually improve the production of all prostaglandins by facilitating the conversion of essential fatty acids.(Price-Pottenger Nutrition Foundation Journal 20:3)
Myth: Arachidonic acid in foods like liver, butter and egg yolks causes production of “bad” inflammatory prostaglandins.
Truth: Series 2 prostaglandins that the body makes from arachidonic acid both encourage and inhibit inflammation under appropriate circumstances. Arachidonic acid is vital for the function of the brain and nervous system. (Price-Pottenger Nutrition Foundation Journal 20:3)
Myth: Beef causes colon cancer
Truth: Argentina, with higher beef consumption, has lower rates of colon cancer than the US. Mormons have lower rates of colon cancer than vegetarian Seventh Day Adventists (Cancer Res 35:3513 1975)
Yes I did and if this bill was so great why did they sneak it in under HR 3082. For a minute put on your thinking cap on and all the FDA would have to do is issue a false recall to ruin a small business as they do FAST TRACK for money for BIG PHARMA that has already caused deaths. A false recall could and would destroy a company allowing them to be scooped up by Big Corp. and BIG AGGI. This bill is over reaching the FDA already makes recalls a forced one is unconstitutional.
Got an explanation for exactly how this bill manages that? The recall is far more to the benefit of smaller operations, as contamination is going to be local and not even addressed by this bill, but local food safety laws instead. This is for situations like the massive peanut contamination a year or so ago, in which the company reacted slowly to recall massive amounts of food with dangerous salmonella contamination.
Myth: To avoid heart disease, we should use margarine instead of butter.
Truth: Margarine eaters have twice the rate of heart disease as butter eaters.(Nutrition Week 3/22/91 21:12)
Myth: Americans do not consume enough essential fatty acids.
Truth: Americans consume far too much of one kind of EFA (omega-6 EFAs found in most polyunsaturated vegetable oils) but not enough of another kind of EFA (omega-3 EFAs found in fish, fish oils, eggs from properly fed chickens, dark green vegetables and herbs, and oils from certain seeds such as flax and chia, nuts such as walnuts and in small amounts in all whole grains.)(Am J Clin Nutr 1991 54:438-63)
Myth:A vegetarian diet will protect you against atherosclerosis.
Truth: The International Atherosclerosis Project found that vegetarians had just as much atherosclerosis as meat eaters.(Lab Invest 1968 18:498)

It is amazing to me how this bill was rammed through without any noise about what is REALLY inside it( much like the health care bill was). The big agriculture corporations like Monsanto lobbied hard for this bill so they can secure their strangle hold on our food supply thanks to the idiots in Washington who don not represent the people but special interests who line their pockets.

Exactly right! But the support for paradigm shift back to Agriculture will need to come at the Polls, as was done for taxation during the mid-term elections. Oversight and support is governed by our politicians, and voting is the only thing a politician will listen to.
How many of those opposing based on the supposed pro-big-business and anti-small-farms nature of the bill clicked on the little “Money Trail” tab on the page?
If you note, it’s mainly small farmer and organic farm associations that support this bill, while mostly business and larger corporations oppose it (there are some exceptions, but overall, this is true). Why would these kinds of associations, who make it their job to know and support legislation in their favor, inexplicably act against their own best interests?
With all due respect, the MSG allergy is a myth. It’s been debunked in many scientific journals. Here is a list: http://zidbits.com/2010/12/05/is-the-msg-allergy-a-myth/
Sorry, I’m a little late to the party, but check out this link for at least a few reasonable suggestions about how to make this bill better for both food safety and small farmers.

This bill changes USC Code and Federal Law in a way that it will change many other parts of laws.
(a) In General- Section 304(h)(1)(A) (21 U.S.C. 334(h)(1)(A)) is amended by—
(1) striking `credible evidence or information indicating’ and inserting `reason to believe’; and
(2) striking `presents a threat of serious adverse health consequences or death to humans or animals’ and inserting `is adulterated or misbranded under section 403(w)’.
This is impostant because if you take the government to court you can never win. Whatever the gov. believes is the law…Danger, Will Robinson, Danger.
