You are right that we already have laws on the books to convict people of violent crimes. The part you don’t see is how often crimes against the gay community are dismissed and poorly investigated given the victims status. This bill provides for federal intervention that in effect forces the hand of those who don’t feel like prosecuting.

Aren’t all crimes/murders a HATE CRIME? You hate the person enough to kill them or rob them. I don’t care if someone wants to be gay or straight or whatever. Why introduce more bills that aren’t going to work. Americans have the right to feel and think they want to. What happened to being free to hate someone or be racist? It might not be the smartest thing, but you are a free American you have the right to be racist.

You are another right winger who could benefit from a course in reading comprehension, try “Hooked on Phonics”, given that you clearly have not read the new law. For if you had you might realize that it does not provide the sentencing guidelines for a conviction. It provides federal resources to be used to assist in the investigation of a hate crime…. big difference there. You might want to try reading a law before you pretend to be an expert on its effects…

That doesn’t really make much sense. If someone get attacked because he is wearing red, and he happens to be black, the person’s sentance would be increased because the victim was black, regardless of the actual reason for the crime.
Also, if two groups rallied at the same time, one being a gay rights group and the other anti-gay protesters, and a fight broke out, the protestors would get extra punishment for committing a “hate crime,” whereas the gay rights group had just as much hate for the protestors.
This sort of legislation only serves to establish a “thought police” to decide if the defendent had “hate” toward the victims race, sexual orientation, etc. and increase his punishment because of it. If one attacks a gay women, why should he recieve a harsher punishment than one who attacks a strait women. After all, gays want equality, don’t they?

Hate crimes happen every day…as apposed to those committed out of love? All crimes are hate crimes.
