Same here. I am tired of seeing my constitution being ripped apart by out of controle government.

Congress has been undermined. Will you stand up for the Constitution in time of need?

Although this sounds good on face, it would require more clarity and room for discrepancy for me to support it completely. For example, it does take time for Congress to convene and vote on issues, but military action might be necessary on a short term basis in a crisis. Clearly this resolution says offensive actions only, but I’d prefer to give the president a timeframe, such as a few weeks to a month, to maneuver before support is needed for the action. After all, the Constitution also says he’s the Commander in Chief.
Obviously this is only a resolution though. If we want to change presidential power like this, an amendment would be more effective.

But it covers your objection by saying “except in response to an actual or imminent attack against the territory of the United States,” which is the crisis you speak of.

The constitution gives the power to declare war to the congress. Obama and Bush have been ignoring that. This bill came after Panetta boldly stated to the Congress that they would get permission from NATO or th international community and that they would tell Congress their decision.. Basically saying that the International community has authority of our military and not the Congress. Was pretty shocking

  • mgdesmond13 03/16/2012 1:50pm

raichu, i think you’re missing the point. regardless its illegal. Obama admin citing they get permission for military action from the UN and not congress is treasonous. Also, he is NOT commander in chief out of war time. he has since declared the Afghan war over, now hes just a president. the only way he can take military action without approvals is if we’re are attacked here at home.

this is a great step in our congress, stepping up for the people as they are all public servants to us just like the president.

God bless this man! First he sponsors a bill to give churches their free speech back which Lyndon Johnson stole, then he writes one to get the war power back which the executives stole. Is he “regressive” enough for you?
