I think we all fully understand that slavery was immoral.. now lets move on.
Setting up a commission to make a report on the effects of slavery on society is completely unnecessary and should not be a function of government. This project has a budget of $8,000,000! If this bill were to become law, each of the seven members of this commission would make more than $100,000 a year. Cronyism at it’s finest.
Let it go. This is just to line someones pockets under the guise of racial injustice.
I don’t think we need a commision for this,talk about wasting tax payers money.
No one is going to get reparations, what a waste of time, and energy. This guy should be voted out of office for being part of the problem.
It was a economic tool of the time, we have all moved on and no one practices this economic system any longer.
Would probably be better to set up a commission to discurage current slavery and human traficing in the US and educate the American people.
Why is it that everyone wants to get over slavery & move on? Most of you who suggest that we move on are usually white, however, there are a few blacks who say this from time to time also. If you happen to be white & feel this way; what gives you the right to suggest such a thing? If you’re white, you can’t even begin to comprehend how slavery still effects blacks even today. Very rarely does anyone acknowledge the fact that this country’s economy was built on the backs of blacks who worked against their will, bred against their will and beaten to death or to the brink of death at will. During the period of slavery in America, this country’s top GDP was cotton bringing in around $300,000,000 annually. Yet the slave labor that generated these returns were never paid, could not own a home, or any type of property actually. Yet its Americans who selfishly say things like “move on” with no consideration to what Blacks may learn for themselves from such a study. Its so sad that so few care.
