The important thing about this bill is that it pins the minimum wage to the CPI. This prevents the minimum wage from merely exacerbating inflation and rendering itself meaningless. This will take a giant burden off of social safety nets and save federal, state, and local governments a lot of money by forcing employers to pay employees enough to sustain themselves instead of diverting the burden onto taxpayers.

Like many liberal initiatives, this bill is derived primarily from utopian pipe dreams. As was the case with the Affordable Care Act, it was assumed that business owners would simply absorb a tremendous hit to their bottom line, but do so with a smile on their face, knowing that their employees were insured. Wrong. Two years before its implementation, business owners were preemptively cutting hours to ensure that they didn’t meet the 50 full-time employee criteria. Do you think that a similar scenario won’t unfold once the minimum wage reaches $10.10 by 2015? I pity you. Minimum wage laws should be set at a state level, seeing as how the several states are very heterogeneous and comprise unique people and circumstances. For instance, the cost of housing and utilities in Atlanta is nearly 2/3 less than that of Los Angeles. These differences cannot be accounted for at the federal level and it’s naive to think otherwise.
