It is amazing to me how this bill was rammed through without any noise about what is REALLY inside it( much like the health care bill was). The big agriculture corporations like Monsanto lobbied hard for this bill so they can secure their strangle hold on our food supply thanks to the idiots in Washington who don not represent the people but special interests who line their pockets.

I can’t find any part in this bill that specifically prohibits individuals from planting their own personal crops. Even if they did, I sure as hell would continue to plant my tomatoes and flip off “da man.”

Yeah… Read the bill, JSComputerTech is correct. It’s about giving the government more power to deal with large-scale food contamination. Small producers are unlikely to be addressed by this bill, as, even in the cases where a small producer does have a problem, they’re local distribution is too small, and more easily dealt with at the local level.

How many of those opposing based on the supposed pro-big-business and anti-small-farms nature of the bill clicked on the little “Money Trail” tab on the page?

If you note, it’s mainly small farmer and organic farm associations that support this bill, while mostly business and larger corporations oppose it (there are some exceptions, but overall, this is true). Why would these kinds of associations, who make it their job to know and support legislation in their favor, inexplicably act against their own best interests?

Got an explanation for exactly how this bill manages that? The recall is far more to the benefit of smaller operations, as contamination is going to be local and not even addressed by this bill, but local food safety laws instead. This is for situations like the massive peanut contamination a year or so ago, in which the company reacted slowly to recall massive amounts of food with dangerous salmonella contamination.

Nice conspiracy theory; however, it is unconvincing for people who prefer to use tin foil to wrap food instead of as headgear. You’ve not given any reason why the FDA would be motivated to make fake recalls.

Big ag and big pharma are already (hence the name) BIG. Fake recalls on small productions would be like using a sledgehammer to swat flies. They might take down some competitors, but they’d do huge damage to the market in the process by drawing attention to any corrupt dealings, and there are too many for recalls to be effective. Meanwhile, one recall is a huge loss for those big companies, because so much of their product goes through only a few processing plants.

Being called uninformed by a conspiracy theorist is not an insult. It just means I made some moderately insightful comments that he/she can’t figure out how to refute.

I don’t deal in conspiracy theory, I deal in what it says in the bill. I would rather have an over zealous recall than waiting on one and having miscarried babies from listeria, death from e coli and salmonella.

Oh and please stop randomly capitalizing words. It doesn’t help.

Great plan, let’s just stop performing recalls. Let’s take away the FDA’s right to protect us altogether, while we’re at it. Free market, right? Let the people decide for themselves which food products are possibly tainted. If some eggs have E.Coli, then that farm’s customers will all die and it’ll go out of business. Market regulation at its finest.

Maybe in this ideal new world the people will create some sort of independent organization to do testing and investigate food safety. Maybe it could even alert folks when there’s something unsafe on the market. OH WAIT. It’s called the FDA.

Yes I did and if this bill was so great why did they sneak it in under HR 3082. For a minute put on your thinking cap on and all the FDA would have to do is issue a false recall to ruin a small business as they do FAST TRACK for money for BIG PHARMA that has already caused deaths. A false recall could and would destroy a company allowing them to be scooped up by Big Corp. and BIG AGGI. This bill is over reaching the FDA already makes recalls a forced one is unconstitutional.

They are not nutritiousness and have no business in the food safety BUSINESS. Which is what the FDA is a Business they fast track for Big Pharam for money. Example of what lobbyist money can do-!!!
It is supposed to be a safeguard for food quality – what it REALLY is is just another layer of government control at the expense of the people. It puts the small & organic farmer in a precari…ous place- and give the FDA too much authority . These guys @ the FDA do not have a clue about nutrition – they are still talking the " lowfat’ lipid theory that has fueled obesity , cancer, diabetes , arthritis etc by removing the traditional fatty acids and fat soluble vitamins from our diets.
In my book we need to be headed in the opposite direction from the FDA to stay healthy—
Examples-Myth:Heart disease in America is caused by consumption of cholesterol and saturated fat from animal products.
Truth: During the period of rapid increase in heart disease(1920-1960) American consumption of animal fats declined but consumption of hydrogenated and industrially processed vegetable fats increased dramatically.(USDA-HNI)
Myth:Saturated fat clogs arteries.

And that’s all it is. Unfortunately, a lot of people showed up to this page with their tin foil hats on, I think. I’m all for looking at how a bill could be abused, but there has to a reasonable way this could be expected to happen (something that the paranoid have failed to explain).
