The White House is again trying to end government subsides to the student loan industry but a multi-million dollar lobbying effort is pushing back.

The requirement in the Democrats' health care bills that all individuals have some form of insurance coverage has become a prime target of Republican scorn. But, as NPR's Julie Rovner explains, the idea actually originated with Republicans and enjoyed broad bipartisan support until just recently.

Announcing his retirement plans this afternoon, Sen. Evan Bayh [D, IN] cited the dysfunctions of Congress as his main reason:

Of all the things Congress does every year, raising the federal debt limit is definitely the least popular. Unfortunately for them, the Democrats chose the day after their major rebuke in Massachusetts to do it.

Now that they're just about done with removing the public option from the health care bill, several of the same conservative Democrats in the Senate are working on removing the central component -- cap and trade -- from the climate change bill.
