Protecting children from child pornographers is a worthy cause, but this bill is really not about that.

H.R. 1981 is a proposed blanket law that requires every internet service provider (ISP) to gather personal information on every American who uses the internet, and the ISPs must keep those records handy for the government for 18 months. All Americans using the internet will be subject to this.
The information that must be collected includes customers’ names, addresses, phone numbers, credit card numbers, bank account numbers, and temporarily-assigned IP addresses.

This bill is not about pedophiles and makers of child pornography, this bill is about spying on every American who uses the internet and collecting private personal information.

Naming this bill as protection against child pornographers is just a trick to make people support it & disparage those who oppose it.

The way I see the bill is obviously in the right direction for the country. In fact in light of this bill I think a new bill should be proposed. In order to protect our stores and banks from the threat of robbery, we mush set up a system that tracks the whereabouts of all people in America at all times. This would help track (for the purposes of stopping these crimes of course) who was in the area when a major robbery goes down. There is of course no other way this information could be used so don't worry.

I hate child pornographers just as much as the next guy, but this seems like another attempt by our government to take away our civil liberties "in the name of the children" or something like that. No matter how noble the stated cause, the Constitution was respected. This bill sounds scarily similar to the Patriot Act in terms of breaches of privacy and stated intentions, and like a previous commenter well stated, this bill should be titled H.R. 1984.

Yea I definetly don't an ISP provider making it easy to rip you off and steal your Identity but getting important numbers like credit cards or SSN's. There are hackers that would love to have a place to be able to target people easily.... In case Congress members don't know... All you need is a phone #, zipcode or even part of your address including anything else you may use that's personal and can easily find EVERYTHING about you and when I say EVERYTHING I mean Everything you're thinking about right now and more.... If it's about protecting children from porn or sexual predators online or otherwise Great! Anything outside of that, I would question.

Unbelievable. In much of Europe it is illegal for anyone to retain IP addresses or other identifiable information at all. Internet privacy is absolutely paramount in this technological age and to jeopardize that with these ill-conceived retention rules is not only a violation, but demonstrates either a complete lack of understanding in how these mechanisms work, or a blatant disregard for privacy of US citizens. Absolutely oppose! And the use of such a title is manipulative double-speak and reprehensible!

Pervs and criminals already use encryption and anonymization proxies. The ISP-maintained databases will be targeted by criminals and mined for identity info and credit card numbers.

Yet another example of legislators who don't understand how the Internet works.

My concern is that the bill states no specific requirement for how such info should be stored. If there is no encryption requirement, then a hacker would have a field day with all those CC numbers.

Good idea but there's some work left to be done before I could fully support this bill.
