H.R.227 Sanctity of Human Life Act
I am writing as your constituent in the 3rd Congressional district of Tennessee. I hereby inform you that I oppose H.R.227. This same type of absurdity was recently voted down in conservative states such as Mississippi. This type of bill is NOT representative of the ideals, values, and philosophies of the American people. Rather, this bill represents a small moral majority that seek to control women through their reproductive systems, giving a fetus more rights than a woman, who is already a living, breathing, tax-paying member of society!

As usual, the religious right, along with the shameful Republican party, are attempting to do an end-run around Roe v. Wade in an effort to subjugate women to a male-dominated ideology, all under the thin veil of words like "family values." Interesting to note that this bill does nothing to: provide for the cost of raising children; allocate funds for the healthcare costs of a pregnancy (which is medically far more dangerous than an abortion); implement programs to assist women in making sound medical decision--not religiously-motivated, poorly thought through choices.

As always, I will be carefully monitoring your vote on this, and similar, bills. Know without doubt that if you are foolish enough to support this garbage, you will NOT continue to represent Tennesseeans after the next election. I challenge you to introduce legislation that actually supports women's rights, rather than continuing to support a party and legislation that seek to return us to the 1940s, reducing women to mere vessels that produce life, but have no rights of their own.

Finally, this letter has been personalized and is not a form letter. Should you elect to reply, I would appreciate you taking the time to actually prepare a personalized response, and spare me the form letters and e-mails.

Sincerely,
Dana Beltramo

Dear Dana:

Thank you for taking the time to write me with your concerns about
abortion issues. Your input is appreciated, and it is an honor to
represent you in Congress.

I recognize that abortion is a sensitive subject that provokes strong
emotions on both sides of the debate. I am a firm believer that life
begins at conception, and it is important that our laws as a nation
reflect that. All life is precious, and we must fight to protect the
unborn in every manner possible. Abortion is a tragedy, and we must
work towards a society and a culture that embraces the life of the
unborn.

While I am not a member of the House Judiciary Committee, I am
committed to ensuring that all human life is protected from conception.
As a nation that was created on the basis of the right to "life,
liberty and the pursuit of happiness," it is crucial, to the future of
our nation, that we uphold the fundamental right to life. You can rest
assured that I will fight for life as your Representative in Congress.

Thank you again for contacting me with your concerns about life issues,
and please do not hesitate to contact my office if I may be of further
assistance.

Sincerely,

Chuck Fleischmann
Member of Congress

Note to Congressional staff & elected officials reading this: this letter was sent through Contact-Congress features on OpenCongress.org, a free public resource website, but in the future we seek to compel the U.S. Congress to adopt fully open technology for constituent communications. For more information how your office can better handle public feedback through an open API and open standards, contact us -- even today, there are significantly more efficient and responsive ways for our elected officials to receive email feedback than the status quo of individual webforms. For greater public accountability in government, we must make the process of writing one's members of Congress more accessible and empowering. Looking ahead, we will release more data from Contact-Congress letters and Congressional response rates back into the public commons. This will result in a new open data source on bills & issues people care about, as well as encourage best practices in constituent communications and make it possible to grade members of Congress on their responsiveness & citizen satisfaction.
