This act is an obvious attempt to prevent anyone from expressing any contrary opinion to homosexuality. If its true purpose was to prevent bullying then it would defer to laws in every state that prevent harassment.
As a gay man, I do not believe people, who are in opposition to my sexuality, should be forced to be silent on the issue. Gays need to learn early that not everyone in the world will approve--and get over it.
Lastly, this is a spending bill. Most Americans reject having their hard earned tax money spent on speech codes (in opposition to the First Amendment) or other PC frivolity. Enforce the laws on the books.
Sincerely,
Aaron Matthew Arnwine

Dear Mr. Arnwine:
Thank you for getting in touch with me to express your views about the
Safe Schools Improvement Act of 2011 (H.R. 1648). It's good to hear
from you.
I appreciate knowing of your opposition to this legislation. One of my
guiding principles here in the Senate is that Marylanders have a right
to know, to be heard, and to be represented. Information from people
like you is essential if I am to be not only the Senator from Maryland,
but also the Senator for Maryland. Knowing of your views will be very
helpful to me.
Thanks again for contacting me. If I can be of assistance in the
future, or if there is any other federal legislation on which you would
like to comment, please feel free to let me know.
Sincerely,
Barbara A. Mikulski
United States Senator

Note to Congressional staff & elected officials reading this: this letter was sent through Contact-Congress features on OpenCongress.org, a free public resource website, but in the future we seek to compel the U.S. Congress to adopt fully open technology for constituent communications. For more information how your office can better handle public feedback through an open API and open standards, contact us -- even today, there are significantly more efficient and responsive ways for our elected officials to receive email feedback than the status quo of individual webforms. For greater public accountability in government, we must make the process of writing one's members of Congress more accessible and empowering. Looking ahead, we will release more data from Contact-Congress letters and Congressional response rates back into the public commons. This will result in a new open data source on bills & issues people care about, as well as encourage best practices in constituent communications and make it possible to grade members of Congress on their responsiveness & citizen satisfaction.
