Responding to your message

Dear Mr. Barnett:

Thank you for sharing with me your opposition to gay marriage. This
matter has received considerable attention as the Senate Judiciary
Committee advanced a proposal to repeal the federal Defense of Marriage
Act, which defines marriage for federal purposes as being between a man
and a woman and ensures that a state does not have to recognize same-sex
marriages sanctioned in another state.

The issue of gay marriage was first addressed by the United States
Senate in 1996, when I voted in favor of the Defense of Marriage Act.
This legislation passed the Senate by a vote of 85-14 and was signed
into law. I do not anticipate that the Defense of Marriage Act will be
repealed.

Additionally, you may be interested to know that I recently opposed
legislation to repeal the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy
which prohibits homosexuals from serving openly. At a time when so many
servicemembers are engaged in dangerous missions in Iraq and
Afghanistan, I remain concerned that this change will adversely affect
the unit cohesion and combat effectiveness of our military.

Thank you, again, for contacting me on this issue.

Sincerely,

Richard G.
Lugar

States Senator

BUCSHON BULLETIN: Sunday, March 25, 2012

Fellow Hoosiers,

As Friday marked the two year anniversary of the Affordable Care Act
becoming law, I wanted to provide an update to the efforts being taken
on your behalf. This past week, I joined my colleagues in voting to
repeal a provision of the Affordable Care Act that would impact access
to healthcare for millions of seniors - the Independent Payment Advisory
Board (IPAB). This board of 15 unelected bureaucrats would get between
you and your doctor and cut Medicare in an effort to control costs by
rationing the care that seniors currently receive. This board is
appointed by the President and their decisions are difficult to
overturn, requiring a supermajority of Congress, leaving seniors and
doctors with no practical options.

In addition, the Fiscal Year 2013 Budget Proposal presented by House
Republicans on Tuesday repeals the Affordable Care Act. Finally, as we
look to the week ahead, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear oral arguments
surrounding the constitutional challenges to the Affordable Care Act. I
am proud to have signed multiple amicus briefs to the Supreme Court
stating the law is unconstitutional and an infringement on personal
freedom and liberty.

Do you believe the Affordable Care Act should be ruled unconstitutional?

BUCSHON BULLETIN: Tax Reform Survey, Traveling Office Hours, & More

BUCSHON BULLETIN: Thursday, May 3, 2012

Fellow Hoosiers,

The last time the U.S. Senate passed a budget was April 29, 2009. It
has now been over 3 years since the Democrat controlled Senate has
fulfilled this basic, fundamental duty. Each year, the statutory
deadline for consideration of a budget is April 15th. For two
consecutive years, the U.S. House of Representatives has accomplished
this obligation. The House Republicans have voted to put our country on
a path to prosperity that cuts wasteful spending, reforms the tax code,
and encourages job creation. Hardworking Hoosiers must budget for their
families and the federal government should do the same.

The last update discussed Tax Day and Tax Freedom Day. Included was a
survey question regarding the current state of the tax code and less
than 1 percent of respondents felt the tax code should be left alone.
Based on your feedback, I've created a more in-depth survey on taxes
where you can provide your own thoughts on how the tax code impacts you
and your family.

Please click on this link to take the new website survey on Tax Reform.

Finally, I was honored to be named a Conferee for the Surface Highway
Transportation Reauthorization just this past week. I am the only
member of the Indiana Delegation appointed to the Conference Committee
and the only Hoosier on the Committee on Transportation &
Infrastructure. I will be working hard to repair our nation's
infrastructure and using Indiana as an example to help create
legislation that will streamline the process and generate an environment
where the private sector and government can work together.

Sincerely,

Responding to your message

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Barnett,

Thank you for contacting me regarding H.R. 3783, the Countering Iran in
the Western Hemisphere Act of 2012. As your Congressman, it is
beneficial for me to hear your thoughts on this important issue.

H.R. 3783 was introduced by Representative Jeff Duncan (R-SC) on
January 18, 2011. If enacted, H.R. 3783 would make it a national
security priority to counter any hostile activity by Iran in the
Western Hemisphere. Iran continues to justify work on uranium
enrichment and their claims of a purely peaceful nuclear program clash
with their actions and has been met with worldwide skepticism. We must
make sure the dangerous tactics currently being employed by Iran do not
go unchecked. This legislation has passed out of the House Committee on
Foreign Affairs and will now head to the floor for a vote. Please be
assured I will keep your thoughts in mind.

It was good to hear from you. Please do not hesitate to contact me any
time you have an issue of concern before Congress. I encourage you to
visit my website at bucshon.house.gov

BUCSHON BULLETIN: Evansville Jobs Fair, Traveling Office Hours, & More

BUCSHON BULLETIN: Thursday, May 17, 2012

Fellow Hoosiers,

The unemployment rate has been over 8 percent for 39 consecutive months
beginning in February 2009. This is the longest stretch of high
unemployment since monthly records have been kept beginning in 1948. I
often get asked questions pertaining to the subject of where unemployed
or underemployed constituents can find jobs.

In conjunction with the City of Evansville and WorkOne Southwest, we
will host a Jobs Fair in Evansville on Tuesday, May 22nd. The Jobs
Fair will be held at the C.K. Newsome Community Center on 100 East
Walnut Street. A special hour for veterans of the Armed Services will
begin at 8:00 a.m. with the doors open to the general public from 9:00
a.m. to 12:00 p.m. At 8:00 a.m., Mayor Winnecke and I will speak to
employers and job seekers to help kick off the Jobs Fair.

To date, more than 35 regional businesses have signed up to participate
with more than 750 jobs available to be filled. If you are unemployed
or underemployed, I hope you can make it. If you know someone that is
looking for work, please share this information with them.

Of the following, which one do you think has the biggest impact on the
persistently high unemployment rate?
Increased Spending and Budget Deficits
Rising Health Care Costs
A Complex Tax Code
Government Regulations
Other

Finally, I would like to congratulate the City of Princeton for being
named a 2012 Stellar Community by the Lt. Governor's office. I'd also
like to commend the City of Petersburg for being a finalist this year.

Sincerely,

P.S. - A special congratulations to Mollie Joice, a senior from Lincoln
High School in Vincennes, IN, for being named the winner of the 2012
Congressional Art Competition in Indiana's 8th Congressional District.
Her artwork is titled, "Coming Home From the War."

Note to Congressional staff & elected officials reading this: this letter was sent through Contact-Congress features on OpenCongress.org, a free public resource website, but in the future we seek to compel the U.S. Congress to adopt fully open technology for constituent communications. For more information how your office can better handle public feedback through an open API and open standards, contact us -- even today, there are significantly more efficient and responsive ways for our elected officials to receive email feedback than the status quo of individual webforms. For greater public accountability in government, we must make the process of writing one's members of Congress more accessible and empowering. Looking ahead, we will release more data from Contact-Congress letters and Congressional response rates back into the public commons. This will result in a new open data source on bills & issues people care about, as well as encourage best practices in constituent communications and make it possible to grade members of Congress on their responsiveness & citizen satisfaction.
