H.R.5660 Main Street Fairness Act
I am writing as your constituent in the 2nd Congressional district of Utah. I vehemently oppose H.R.5660 - Main Street Fairness Act, and am tracking it using OpenCongress.org. Please oppose this bill and vote against it if given the opportunity.

This bill represents an inappropriate extension of federal power and could entail massive un-intended consequences. States should not have the ability to both hound retailers in their states, and retailers in other states which have sold goods to their citizens. A state has the ability to tax its own citizens and businesses; it is completely ludicrous to grant them the ability to violate state boundaries and tax entities in other states.

This is an extremely important issue which I will watch closely. Be aware that I will hold you accountable if you chose to support this bill.

I will be watching.

Sincerely,
Abraham Burnett

Dear Mr. Burnett,

Thank you for sharing your concerns regarding taxes. I appreciate your
interest in the issues facing our country and state, and I am happy to
respond. When you contact me, you help me to better represent Utah in
Congress.

I support efforts to make the tax code more transparent and fair. In
Congress, I have voted for numerous measures that provide tax relief to
Americans to reduce taxation of capital gains, income, and estate taxes.
I voted in favor of legislation which would raise the threshold at which
the estate tax would be implemented to estates valued at more than $3.5
million. While this is an important first step, I support a total
repeal of this tax.

Tax relief legislation is a step in the right direction, but there is no
question that more needs to be done to simplify the tax code. Any
legislation to overhaul the federal tax code will have an impact on all
segments of our society and should not be taken lightly. I believe that
such reforms should place a greater emphasis on encouraging private
savings and investment, distributing the tax burden fairly, and not
weakening our economy or resulting in budget deficits. As Congress
considers ways to reform and improve the tax code, I intend to carefully
examine each proposal.

Again, thank you for sharing your concerns with me. If you have any
additional questions, please feel free to contact my office.

Sincerely,

Note to Congressional staff & elected officials reading this: this letter was sent through Contact-Congress features on OpenCongress.org, a free public resource website, but in the future we seek to compel the U.S. Congress to adopt fully open technology for constituent communications. For more information how your office can better handle public feedback through an open API and open standards, contact us -- even today, there are significantly more efficient and responsive ways for our elected officials to receive email feedback than the status quo of individual webforms. For greater public accountability in government, we must make the process of writing one's members of Congress more accessible and empowering. Looking ahead, we will release more data from Contact-Congress letters and Congressional response rates back into the public commons. This will result in a new open data source on bills & issues people care about, as well as encourage best practices in constituent communications and make it possible to grade members of Congress on their responsiveness & citizen satisfaction.
