For constituents of California's 8th Congressional District who have included their name and postal address, I will respond to your message as quickly as possible.
Dear Friends:
After nearly a year in the majority, House Republicans have yet to address the number one priority of the American people – job creation. Instead of working to put the American people back to work, their time as leaders in Congress has been marked by missed opportunities and made-up crises. In order to protect tax breaks for the wealthy and those that ship jobs overseas, they have failed to bring forth a jobs agenda and have focused their efforts on proposals that undermine programs working to preserve the health, education and well-being of all Americans. This past spring, House Democrats stood united against the Republican effort to end Medicare as we know it. Their plan immediately raises costs for seniors, cuts funding for Medicare and forces many vulnerable seniors and people with disabilities to buy private insurance with a voucher that decreases in value each year.
My Democratic colleagues and I are committed to initiatives that promote job creation, strengthen the middle class, and reduce our deficit. Over the last three months, I have met with over 50 small businesses to get their perspective on how we can best foster the creation of jobs and aid our economic recovery. Our “Make It In America” initiative, working alongside President Obama’s American Jobs Act, will invest in innovation and technology, level the playing field with China and other trading partners, and rebuild our nation’s crumbling infrastructure. Our big, bold, and balanced plans include extending the payroll tax cut and unemployment insurance, measures that put money in the pockets of working families, create jobs and spur economic growth.
It is a privilege to represent San Francisco in Congress. This year, I was proud to help secure a Choice Neighborhoods grant of $30.5 million to redevelop and reinvigorate Hunters Point and to pass into law the America’s Cup Act of 2011 in order to ensure the success of the 34th America’s Cup, hosted by our beautiful city. As we celebrated the long-overdue end of the discriminatory ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ policy and the 20th anniversary of the AIDS Memorial Grove this fall, I was pleased to lead my colleagues in filing an Amicus Brief to the Supreme Court arguing against the so-called Defense of Marriage Act. Just last week, we marked the official end to the war in Iraq, bringing our troops home in time for the holidays and ending a war that has cost the American people too much in lives, in dollars, and our reputation around the world.
In the new year, my colleagues and I will continue our efforts to reignite the American dream by building ladders of opportunity and tearing down barriers to success for anyone willing to work hard, play by the rules, and take responsibility. We are committed to strengthening the middle class, empowering our entrepreneurs and creating well-paying jobs. As always, I look forward to hearing from you on this and other issues of concern to you.
Best regards,
Nancy Pelosi
Member of Congress

Tax Tips for 2012
As the tax deadline of April 17th looms on the horizon, my office would like to pass along a few online tax resources that may help you with your filing process. The IRS website has a host of online tools to help you submit your tax information, track your refund, and more.
Keep in mind the following things for this 2012 tax season:
Updated Tax Tips. Each year, the IRS distributes an updated list of tax tips for filers. The list can be found on the Tax Tips 2012 page on the IRS website.
Cut down on the paperwork. If you make less than $57,000 gross income, you may use Freefile, an IRS tool that allows you to file your tax forms online without the hassle of mailing.
Track your refund. Where’s My Refund? is an online tool that allows taxpayers to track their refunds. To receive your refund faster through setting up direct deposit, click here.
Tax credits for small businesses. In response to the recession, the Democratic-led Congress implemented new tax credits to spur economic growth and recovery. The Small Business Jobs Act and the Affordable Care Act created additional tax credits for small businesses. Click here to see if your small business qualifies for any of the tax cut provisions under the Small Business Jobs Act. Click here to see if you qualify for tax credits under the Affordable Care Act.
Tax credits for students. Parents and students may qualify for the American Opportunity Credit that may be claimed for the first four years of college expenses. Taxpayers are eligible for full credit if they are individuals earning less than $80,000 a year, or a couple earning $160,000 or less. For more information, click here.
Assistance with Federal Agencies
If you are experiencing issues with a federal government agency that is not primarily related to legislation, my office may be able to help. Examples include problems with Social Security, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), Medicare, Veterans Affairs or difficulties with immigration and visa applications.
In most cases, federal agencies will be able to directly answer your questions. However, if you have already contacted an agency and are experiencing unusual delays or unsatisfactory service, I would be pleased to aid you in resolving your issue. For more information, please visit my website. If you would like to make an appointment with a caseworker, please contact my district office at (415) 556-4862.

Note to Congressional staff & elected officials reading this: this letter was sent through Contact-Congress features on OpenCongress.org, a free public resource website, but in the future we seek to compel the U.S. Congress to adopt fully open technology for constituent communications. For more information how your office can better handle public feedback through an open API and open standards, contact us -- even today, there are significantly more efficient and responsive ways for our elected officials to receive email feedback than the status quo of individual webforms. For greater public accountability in government, we must make the process of writing one's members of Congress more accessible and empowering. Looking ahead, we will release more data from Contact-Congress letters and Congressional response rates back into the public commons. This will result in a new open data source on bills & issues people care about, as well as encourage best practices in constituent communications and make it possible to grade members of Congress on their responsiveness & citizen satisfaction.
