Congress?

The national debt is $15 trillion. I believe we must reduce spending to
avoid increasing the debt. What should we do to balance the budget?

Cut spending (including Social Security) but don't raise taxes
Cut spending (but not Social Security) and don't raise taxes
Raise taxes but don't cut spending

Reduce government spending
Reduce government regulations
Invest tax dollars in private companies that need funding
Increase government spending for "economic stimulus"
Other/Unsure
4. Repeal Health Care Law?
I voted against health care "reform" because it will increase costs and
threaten the quality of our care. What should we do now?
Keep the law the way it is
Reform and re-write the law
Repeal the entire law and start from scratch
Other/Unsure
5. Build an Oil Pipeline?
I support American energy development. Do you think we should allow the
Keystone Pipeline to be built to carry Canadian oil efficiently to U.S.
markets, creating jobs and increasing oil supplies?
Yes, I'm tired of getting our oil from the Middle East and Venezuela
No, let's take time to assess the environmental risks
Other/Unsure
6. Tear Down the Dams?
I think hydroelectric power is a renewable resource that powers our
state with clean energy. Some other people say the Snake River dams
should be torn down to improve salmon returns. What do you think?
Don't tear down the dams
Tear down the dams
Unsure
7. Afghanistan?
President Obama has begun to withdraw troops from Afghanistan and wants
to remove all forces by 2014. What do you think?
Keep withdrawing troops as planned
Withdraw some troops, but extend the deadline past 2014
We should not announce a withdrawal until our goals are achieved
Other/Unsure
8. Gun Control?
I believe we have a constitutional right to own guns. What is your view
about gun ownership?
We have a basic right to own guns
There should be more controls on gun ownership

9. Immigration?
There are about 11 million illegal immigrants in the U.S. What should
be our top priority when it comes to immigration?
Secure the borders and don't give amnesty to illegal immigrants
Secure borders first, then develop a comprehensive solution which may
include amnesty for some illegal immigrants
Provide amnesty
Other/Unsure
10. Abortion?
Do you think there should be more restrictions on abortion?
I would vote pro-choice

Dear Friend,
I just wanted to give you a quick update about the North Spokane Freeway
- and our efforts to gain funding for the Freeway at the state and
federal levels.
On February 22nd, I spent the day in Olympia
ov%2findex.cfm%3fsectionid%3d96%26amp%3bparentid%3d25%26amp%3bsectiontre
e%3d25%2c96%26amp%3bitemid%3d2053> where I met with Gov. Gregoire,
Transportation Secretary Paula Hammond, and state legislators in both
parties to make the case for the North Spokane Freeway and other Eastern
Washington transportation priorities. I pointed out that the Freeway is
a true shovel-ready project that will create thousands of jobs and bring
hundreds of millions of dollars in new tax revenue to our community. Not
long after, I was pleased to learn that the State Transportation
Department submitted a TIGER IV grant application

e%3d25%2c96%26amp%3bitemid%3d2054> for the Freeway. This is a big
breakthrough in our efforts to complete the Freeway, create jobs, and
boost Eastern Washington's economy.
As you know, while the state government has taken the lead in Freeway
funding, the federal government definitely has a role to play, as well.
And that's why - on February 29th - I sent a letter to U.S.
Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood making the case for the Freeway as
an "example of the type of infrastructure development federal/state
partnerships should be supporting." To read my full letter to Secretary
LaHood, please click here.

A few days ago, I had the chance to make the case to the Secretary
in-person when he stopped by my office to discuss the Freeway and other
transportation projects. It was a good meeting, and I am more optimistic
than ever that we will see real progress in the near-future.
But make no mistake, this will not be the last of my efforts. I'm
already planning a regional transportation summit and this will be
followed by further summits later this year. So stay tuned. To keep

job-creating initiatives, please click here

Thank you for your interest in growing Eastern Washington's economy. As
always, feel free to contact me about any issue you care about.
Warm regards,
Cathy

Note to Congressional staff & elected officials reading this: this letter was sent through Contact-Congress features on OpenCongress.org, a free public resource website, but in the future we seek to compel the U.S. Congress to adopt fully open technology for constituent communications. For more information how your office can better handle public feedback through an open API and open standards, contact us -- even today, there are significantly more efficient and responsive ways for our elected officials to receive email feedback than the status quo of individual webforms. For greater public accountability in government, we must make the process of writing one's members of Congress more accessible and empowering. Looking ahead, we will release more data from Contact-Congress letters and Congressional response rates back into the public commons. This will result in a new open data source on bills & issues people care about, as well as encourage best practices in constituent communications and make it possible to grade members of Congress on their responsiveness & citizen satisfaction.
