Dear Michael,
Knowing of your interest in women's reproductive health care, I wanted
to update you on recent events in the Senate.
I have heard from thousands of Oregonians about the importance of
women's access to comprehensive health care. This week, Senator Blunt
(R-MO) introduced an amendment to the surface transportation
reauthorization bill which would severely limit women's access to
preventive health services. I strongly opposed this amendment and was
relieved that it did not pass. Please click the image below to view the
floor speech I gave in opposition to this amendment.
I hope you will continue to send your observations and thoughts my way.
Senator Merkley speaks the importance of women's access to
comprehensive health care.

Dear Michael,
Knowing of your interest in civil liberties and the detainee provisions
in the FY12 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), I wanted to
share with you, by clicking the video below, my views on some recent
debates over indefinite detention provisions.
Because of my concerns with the NDAA provisions, I am co-sponsoring
Senator Feinstein's (CA) Due Process Guarantee Act (S. 2003). This
bill would amend the Non-Detention Act so that the Post- 9/11
Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF) would not be construed
as congressional authorization of the detention of U.S. citizens or
lawful permanent resident aliens arrested in the U.S., unless express
authority for such detention is given by Congress. It was the AUMF
that has been used by two administrations to claim authority for
indefinite detention.
Please know that I will continue working to ensure that the civil
liberties and constitutional rights of American citizens are properly
protected.

Note to Congressional staff & elected officials reading this: this letter was sent through Contact-Congress features on OpenCongress.org, a free public resource website, but in the future we seek to compel the U.S. Congress to adopt fully open technology for constituent communications. For more information how your office can better handle public feedback through an open API and open standards, contact us -- even today, there are significantly more efficient and responsive ways for our elected officials to receive email feedback than the status quo of individual webforms. For greater public accountability in government, we must make the process of writing one's members of Congress more accessible and empowering. Looking ahead, we will release more data from Contact-Congress letters and Congressional response rates back into the public commons. This will result in a new open data source on bills & issues people care about, as well as encourage best practices in constituent communications and make it possible to grade members of Congress on their responsiveness & citizen satisfaction.
