SGT - US Army, Military Police (RET)
Dear Mr. Hutchison:
Thank you for letting me know of your support for H.R. 822, the National
Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Act of 2011, legislation that would allow
individuals with a concealed carry permit to carry firearms across state
lines. I appreciate hearing from you.
You will be pleased to know that the House passed H.R. 822 on November
16, 2011 by a vote of 272-154. I am a cosponsor of H.R. 822 and voted
for passage of the bill. The Senate must now act.
I have also supported other right to carry legislation. For instance,
in 2009 I voted for legislation to allow an individual to carry a
concealed firearm in U.S. Parks and wildlife refuges in accordance with
state law. That legislation is now law. And I previously cosponsored
and supported passage of legislation to allow retired law enforcement
officers to receive reciprocity to carry across state lines. That
legislation became law in 2004.
Again, thanks for your message. You can be sure that I will continue to
fight to protect the Second Amendment rights of law abiding citizens
against further abridgement by the federal government.
Sincerely,
Rep. Peter DeFazio
Fourth District, OREGON

Merkley
Dear Isaac,
Thank you for contacting me to express your views on gun control
legislation. It is an honor to serve as your Senator, and I appreciate
hearing your views on this important issue.
I understand that many Oregonians cherish their second amendment
rights, and I support the ability of law abiding gun owners to own and
use firearms. At the same time, however, I believe that we must
protect our children and ensure that deadly weapons do not fall into
the hands of criminals. For this reason, I support common sense
measures that help keep our communities safe including mandatory
background checks and closing the gun show loophole that permits
unlicensed private vendors to sell privately-owned guns at gun shows
without background checks.
I will continue to stand for sportsmen and law abiding citizens, and
protect their constitutional right to bear arms.
Thank you, again, for sharing your thoughts with me, and please
continue to keep me informed about issues that concern you.
Sincerely,
Jeffrey A. Merkley
United States Senator

Dear Mr. Hutchison:
Thank you for contacting me about the National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Act. I appreciate hearing from you on this issue.
As you may know, the National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Act of 2011 passed the House in November 2011. It was then referred to the Senate Committee on the Judiciary where it now awaits consideration.
Like many Oregonians, I believe in the right of law-abiding citizens to own guns for protection and to hunt. I also support certain reasonable restrictions to keep guns out of the hands of felons and to keep guns away from children. I have made this decision after listening to America?s law enforcement officers who put their lives on the line every day to protect citizens from gun violence ? an overwhelming majority of whom support some reasonable restrictions on gun ownership. Please know that I will weigh both your view and that of our law enforcement professionals should this legislation come up for consideration in the Senate.
Again, thank you for keeping me apprised of your views. If I can be of any further assistance to you on this or other issues, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Note to Congressional staff & elected officials reading this: this letter was sent through Contact-Congress features on OpenCongress.org, a free public resource website, but in the future we seek to compel the U.S. Congress to adopt fully open technology for constituent communications. For more information how your office can better handle public feedback through an open API and open standards, contact us -- even today, there are significantly more efficient and responsive ways for our elected officials to receive email feedback than the status quo of individual webforms. For greater public accountability in government, we must make the process of writing one's members of Congress more accessible and empowering. Looking ahead, we will release more data from Contact-Congress letters and Congressional response rates back into the public commons. This will result in a new open data source on bills & issues people care about, as well as encourage best practices in constituent communications and make it possible to grade members of Congress on their responsiveness & citizen satisfaction.
