Dear Friends,
Small businesses have always been the best job creators in our country. Prosperous small businesses can hire more workers, provide them with benefits and increase the company's overall productivity. This, however, does not merely benefit the small business owner and their employees. Successful small businesses mean a successful local economy. And a successful local economy positively impacts the entire community.
Last week I held a round table with local small business owners to discuss job creation. The one thing I kept hearing was that our small businesses want to hire more, but they need increased access to capital.
Since coming to Congress I have supported legislation to do just that, and as Massachusetts’ only member on the Small Business Committee, I have even introduced legislation that will provide tax breaks to businesses that hire unemployed veterans. Unfortunately, the majority in the House of Representatives just wants to make blind cuts even though they will hurt the very people who can help bring us out of this economic slump.
We need to get people back to work and improve our local economy. I unequivocally support programs that aid our small businesses, but I also know that the best way to really help our small businesses is by hearing from the owners. I hope you will consider filling out my survey below on this important topic, and if you are not a local small business owner, I encourage you to forward this to the ones you know. Together, we can work to change our local economy and community for the better.
Warm regards,
Bill Keating

Dear Friends,
Since taking office in January, we’ve worked together to reinforce the security at our airports, help small business owners and preserve important environmental regulations, among many other things. But first on my list of priorities has always been creating honest, good-paying jobs in our district and across our state. I’m happy to announce that 10,000 of those desperately needed new jobs will be coming to Massachusetts’ 10th Congressional District.
The transfer of the South Weymouth Naval Air Station into Southfield, a mixed residential-commercial, smart growth transit oriented development, has taken many years. On Tuesday, however, the deal was signed and the land will be transferred from the US Navy on December 15th. Final negotiations had focused on the environmental cleanup of the former naval station. Together with EPA Region Administrator Curt Spalding, we fought to ensure the Navy appropriately cleaned the site so that Southfield will be a safe place to live and work. Their agreement to do so was the final hurdle and I am extremely pleased that the day when we have passed that hurdle has come.
Southfield is the largest active development anywhere in our area, and its long term importance to the region and the Commonwealth cannot be understated. It will consist of approximately 2,800 housing units, which include apartments, condos, town houses and single family homes, as well as 2 million square feet of commercial space – 450,000 square feet of which will be for retailers. Further, 70% of the land at Southfield has been reserved for open space and active recreation. In short, it’s a great example of a sustainable development where people can live and work in same area, but also have the option of taking a commuter rail to Boston.
At a time when so many people across the country are out of work, we should be very thankful for the thousands of new jobs that will created in our area once the development of Southfield begins.
Warm regards,
Bill Keating

Note to Congressional staff & elected officials reading this: this letter was sent through Contact-Congress features on OpenCongress.org, a free public resource website, but in the future we seek to compel the U.S. Congress to adopt fully open technology for constituent communications. For more information how your office can better handle public feedback through an open API and open standards, contact us -- even today, there are significantly more efficient and responsive ways for our elected officials to receive email feedback than the status quo of individual webforms. For greater public accountability in government, we must make the process of writing one's members of Congress more accessible and empowering. Looking ahead, we will release more data from Contact-Congress letters and Congressional response rates back into the public commons. This will result in a new open data source on bills & issues people care about, as well as encourage best practices in constituent communications and make it possible to grade members of Congress on their responsiveness & citizen satisfaction.
