Dear Mr. Ramineni:
Thank you for getting in touch with me about the Trade Reform, Accountability, Development, and Employment Act of 2009 (TRADE Act).
Some in Congress continue to push for international trade and labor policies that benefit the wealthy and do little to protect American workers and our small businesses. In the Senate, I will continue to support initiatives that help defeat such damaging trade and labor policies. To educate members of Congress, I have been trying to overcome attempts by free trade proponents to reduce the debate to a false choice between ?free trade? and ?no trade.?
While many jobs have been shipped overseas or across borders in recent years, we have been increasingly successful in standing up to pressure from corporate America and raising the profile of trade and labor issues. More members of Congress are now realizing this is not a debate on whether one supports trade, but whether one supports responsible trade and labor policies.
The TRADE Act is one more step in the right direction. I am pleased to have re-introduced this legislation in the 111th Congress. This legislation offers a fundamentally different vision for this country?s trade policy. It requires the Government Accountability Office to review the economic consequences of all the existing trade agreements, clearly defines the labor and environmental standards that must be included in all future free trade agreements, and sets fair international investment rules that firmly prioritize the public interest over shareholders? interests.
While it will be a long, uphill battle during the 111th Congress to pass this bill, I will continue to fight for its passage. Thank you again for getting in touch with me and for your support on this important issue.
Sincerely,
Sherrod Brown
United States Senator

Note to Congressional staff & elected officials reading this: this letter was sent through Contact-Congress features on OpenCongress.org, a free public resource website, but in the future we seek to compel the U.S. Congress to adopt fully open technology for constituent communications. For more information how your office can better handle public feedback through an open API and open standards, contact us -- even today, there are significantly more efficient and responsive ways for our elected officials to receive email feedback than the status quo of individual webforms. For greater public accountability in government, we must make the process of writing one's members of Congress more accessible and empowering. Looking ahead, we will release more data from Contact-Congress letters and Congressional response rates back into the public commons. This will result in a new open data source on bills & issues people care about, as well as encourage best practices in constituent communications and make it possible to grade members of Congress on their responsiveness & citizen satisfaction.
