This letter was a reply from the office of Sen. Dianne Feinstein [D, CA] on February 07, 2012.
U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein responding to your message

Dear Carmel:

Thank you for contacting me to express your support for repealing the
Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and the Government Pension Offset
(GPO) provisions of the Social Security Act. I appreciate the time you
took to write and apologize for the delay in my response.

As you know, I have introduced legislation to repeal the WEP and GPO in
the last four Congresses. Repealing the WEP and GPO provisions would
allow public sector pensioners and private sector retirees to collect
the full amount of their expected Social Security benefits, rather than
the dramatically reduced benefit they receive now.

Since I first introduced the "Social Security Fairness Act," the cost of
full repeal of the WEP and GPO has increased significantly, with
estimates as high as $100 billion over ten years. In light of our
unsustainable debt and deficits, I have asked supporters of the "Social
Security Fairness Act" to work with me on a solution that addresses the
inequities inherent in the WEP and GPO while being mindful of our
nation's fiscal situation. Additionally, broad cuts are taking place
across all levels of government, making passage of this bill, at this
time, not possible.

Once again, thank you for writing. I welcome any additional comments or
suggestions on how to address this critical issue, and please do not
hesitate to contact my Washington, D.C. office at (202) 224 - 3841.

Sincerely,

A

Dianne Feinstein

Note to Congressional staff & elected officials reading this: this letter was sent through Contact-Congress features on OpenCongress.org, a free public resource website, but in the future we seek to compel the U.S. Congress to adopt fully open technology for constituent communications. For more information how your office can better handle public feedback through an open API and open standards, contact us -- even today, there are significantly more efficient and responsive ways for our elected officials to receive email feedback than the status quo of individual webforms. For greater public accountability in government, we must make the process of writing one's members of Congress more accessible and empowering. Looking ahead, we will release more data from Contact-Congress letters and Congressional response rates back into the public commons. This will result in a new open data source on bills & issues people care about, as well as encourage best practices in constituent communications and make it possible to grade members of Congress on their responsiveness & citizen satisfaction.
