Personal liberties and government intrusion aside, the BMI is an overly simplistic approach to determine ideal body weight. It does not account for bone mass, muscle mass, age or gender... I personally am labeled as "obese" by the BMI but consider myself to be overweight. I would be very skeletal, missing a limb or two or dead if I had to drop 58 pounds to be within "normal" weight guidelines. If there is no good measurement system, which the BMI is not, the merits and purposes of H.R. 5209 will fail. It should not be passed.
I will be contacting the sponsers of the bill and my congressman directly to elaborate on my concerns.
See Wikipedia for a good history of the BMIs intent and limitations. See also Kenneth Rothman's article on "BMI-related errors in the classification of obesity" in the International Journal of Obesity 32:S56-S59, August 2008.
