• On February 23, 2010, by leahstorey - Every day I drive within the Virginia and the District of Columbia, I see a majority (over 50%) of drivers holding a cell phone while driving. They do this while driving at speeds over the posted limit (at times excessive), during hazardous weather and traffic conditions, and commit numerous reckless driving infractions under state statutes - specifically in the state I temporarily reside. There is no reason a person cannot use a hands-free device. There are ones that are inexpensive to purchase, work very well, and most come with the purchase of a phone. If it is a complaint they are a discomfort, the question should be ask, “How comfortable is it to hold a cell phone to your ear while driving with one hand, and which is truly safer?” I have used a hands-free device since 2002. Text messaging should be prohibited while driving. This bill is not taking away the right to use the cell phone, but limits how it is used, while driving, for protection and safety to others.
