It would eliminate decades worth of consumer privacy laws and make it easier for companies to justify abusing their users’ personal information and share it wholesale with the government.

Privacy on the internet is essential for social and economic innovation. Without privacy protections, we will have mass self-censorship, and that is detrimental to the democratic promise of the internet.

I support the Franken-Paul amendment to strike the information sharing provisions from the bill. Without the amendment, this bill is simply unacceptable and I would urge a “no” vote.

OpenCongress Bill Summary
-
This bill would establish a new National Cybersecurity Council to identify technology sectors as “critical infrastructure” and approve or reject the sectors’ plans to secure their networks from cyber attacks. Businesses would not be required to adopt Council-approved security plans, but if they do they would be rewarded with broad protection from lawsuits and other benefits. The bill would also bolster website owners’ authority to monitor their users’ information and block users’ access. Companies would be given special legal immunity for sharing user information with federal government agencies.

Senate Amendment 2575 to the Cybersecurity Act of 2012, introduced by Senator Lautenberg of NJ, is a deceitful way to introduce knee-jerk gun control provisions into a completely unrelated internet security bill.
Don't let our government operate this way -- trying to infringe upon our 2nd amendment rights through backdoor legislation.
Read the text of the Amendment in the "Congressional Record":http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/C?r112:./temp/~r112b1pMaa and then contact your Senators to let them know you oppose both limits on our constitutional right to bear arms AND the dishonest nature of this backdoor legislation.

Send this little note to Congress:
S.3414 Cybersecurity Act of 2012
I am writing as your constituent in the 7th Congressional district of Virginia. I'm tracking S.3414 - Cybersecurity Act of 2012 using OpenCongress.org, the free public resource website for government transparency and accountability.
Wo. Slow down with this thing. Good? Bad? I don't know of the initial idea but all of We The People know that Whenever the government touches something it turns into ...to put it mildly, fertilizer.
The Heritage Foundation has a good article on this subject with some very good questions: "National Security and Defense
Cybersecurity Legislation: Questions That Need to Be Answered."
Be it known, officially I said tracking BUT really opposing.
Much debate is necessary. I don't care if the debate lasts until the Purple Martins or the Swallows (depends on where you live) back from their winter vacation. Much debate.
Peace on
