Conyers was born May 16, 1929 in Detroit, Michigan. He received both his B.A. (1957) and his J.D. from Wayne State University (1958). He served in the National Guard (1948-1950), United States Army (1950-1954), and United States Army Reserves (1954-1957). He was a staff member for Rep. John D. Dingell, Jr., of Michigan from 1958-1961.
