McCaul was born January 14, 1962 in Dallas, Texas. He attained his B.S. from Trinity University in 1984 and his J.D. from St. Mary's University in 1987. He was a member of the Bush-Cheney transition team in 2000. He worked as an attorney and a federal prosecutor before running for the U.S. House in 2004. Lloyd Doggett originally held the post in District 10, but following redistricting, Doggett ran for Representative in District 25. McCaul easily won in the district with no Democratic opposition.
