S.9 - Stronger Economy, Stronger Borders Act of 2009
- johnpage : I believe this is an open-ended attempt to provide amnesty for the many, many illegal aliens that are in our country tody. If Mr. Reid and the co-sponsors of this Bill really wanted to protect this country and enhance our financial recovery, they would provide the resources to close our boarders and return illegal aliens to their home country.
- slimgpd : I would like to see more details on this bill before I decide.

H.R.226 - Broadcaster Freedom Act of 2009
- moionfire : The fairness doctrine doesn't force broadcasters to "promote" other opinions. It forces them to present opposing views in order to give people an accurate understanding of other opinions. Using the word "promote" assumes the broadcasters have to agree with every opinion that is presented to the public...
- rememberyourhistory : You people should really read this one. It doesn't say anything about limiting speech, or what you can or can't say. It says if there is a controversial issue, such as an election or a war, the broadcasters can not freely "push" their own agenda over public airwaves. If they spend time on one view, they need to use the same amount of time for the opposing view.
I believe in this one wholeheartedly, see William Randolph Hearst, American newspaper magnate and leading newspaper publisher in the late 1800s, the Spanish–American War and Yellow Journalism. His quote was "You furnish the pictures, I'll furnish the war." Look it up. People who don't want to hear opposing views, well you should look up Fascism.

H.R.17 - Citizens' Self-Defense Act of 2009
- boomer47 : I have problems with this because it seems to narrow our second ammendment RIGHT. WE currently have a second ammendment right to bear arms for any purpose. This seems to remove from the definition the right to protect ourselves from an over zealous government which a reading of Federalist 46 makes abundantly clear we have the right to do. Personally... I don't like it. It seems to me if we allow this to pass we are supporting allowing congress to restrict what is already a RIGHT and thus sliding further into tyranny. We have a RIGHT to bear arms it needs no definition.
- crackpot : I think most of them haven't read any of the Constitution.

H.R.197 - National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Act of 2009
- bonniebluepatriot : 2nd part - The militia was not limited to land owners. I do believe it did not include women at the time, since women didn't have much of any rights at the time, and in many instances were considered their husband's property. Women were not allowed to join the military then either.
In my opinion, however, the 2nd Amendment applies to all "the people", as we would define people now, including women. If it didn't, then black people couldn't be armed either since, at the time, they also were legally considered property, not people.
The 2nd Amendment clearly states that the right of the people to keep and bear arms can not be infringed. While the definition of "people" has expanded, the RIGHT has not changed.
Would love to hear your thoughts on the issue.
- bonniebluepatriot : Watchemoket- I have to answer this in at least two parts, because it takes more space than allowed.
First of all, the militia at that time referred to the people, not to the military. The people, voluntarily, defended their lives, liberty and sacred honor. Well-regulated means that if you don't have the means, ability and equipment to do the job, you can't. If you're not armed to the same degree, trained to the same degree, as your enemy (or potential enemy in the case of a tyranny rising) then you have less chance of defending against it.

H.R.1168 - Veterans Retraining Act of 2009
- slimgpd : My father is a Vietnam Veteran. He doesn't need the help this bill gives but I feel strongly for veterans. These are the people that defended us and they get screwed all the time. They deserve more than this bill but its a good start.
- CowboyRick : These people have given and greatly suffered and still suffer from this act of generosity, this BILL should help repay for their losses both emotional and PHYSICAL. They should be aided and assisted in their endeavors.
