This isn’t for the purpose of invading anything. This gives people the RIGHT to give consent digitally. Which we couldn’t do before. If you don’t want to connect to Facebook, share what you’re watching with friends, etc, you don’t have to.

Sparhawk2k 09/17/2011 8:45pm

What would people be opposing here? It seems like a very simple bill to correct an oversight?

Are people so against letting Netflix do social networking with the user’s permission?

So I haven’t read this yet but I’ve immediately got a question from the summary.

“Changes the patent application system from one that awards patents to the first person to invent something to a system that awards the first person to file a patent application on an invention.”

Does that mean you could patent something that thousands of people have been doing already as long as you’re the first person to file? Does prior art not mean anything?

Sparhawk2k 01/19/2011 8:01am

First, I really don’t want it repealed, especially in such a silly way. But I was wondering about one other technicality of the process. I know bills have to be approved by both the House and the Senate… But does it need to be the same year? Could the House pass it and nothing happen now because the Senate doesn’t have the votes? And then when the Senate makeup changes, could they pass the House’s bill without changes and have it go to the President? Even if the current House has also changed and wouldn’t have passed that bill anymore?

Obviously this is a rather far fetched scenario… I was just curious.

Sparhawk2k 01/05/2011 10:19am

That’s great to see. Though I’d be curious how the “Right to Amend” works in practice. It seems like there could be a fine line to deciding if something is relevant. And I wonder if submitting amendments might be used to try to slow down the process. Though the paper trail involved there might help stop that.

Sparhawk2k 01/21/2010 9:23am

What sort of options are there for changing this? Since it’s coming from the Supreme Court would it require amending the constitution? Or are there smaller changes that could be made to stop the “mini-revolution”?

The Sunlight article talked about transparency but is there anything else being looked at?

Sparhawk2k 01/13/2010 12:02pm

Obviously there isn’t as much demand for this yet but I’d love to see an Android version of the same app.

Sparhawk2k 01/05/2010 9:24am

I really do like the idea of more transparency. But I do wonder how televising these sorts of meetings would change the nature of the meetings. If these are televised will they then feel the need to have other even less formal meetings to decide more about what’s going to happen in these ones?

Sparhawk2k 08/03/2009 12:28pm

Is this basically the same thing as RealID like the comments seem to imply? What I’ve seen so far is that this new one is to make it more workable for the states and for traveling?

I’m still against the idea in general but I’m wondering if people are seeing a similar name and overreacting or if the discussions I’ve seen so far have tried to cover up what this really is…

Sparhawk2k 07/07/2009 3:55pm

How can there be this many votes and no comments? _

I actually don’t normally mind these sorts of things. They seem to do a lot of them so this one isn’t any different. Though I do find it rather silly that congress could officially state “Whereas Michael Jackson was labeled ‘The King of Pop’” with a straight face.

Sparhawk2k 06/26/2009 11:56am

I always hate how hard it is to find out what these bills are actually about and what random stuff has been added at the last minute. I’m generally for a climate change / clean energy bill but there’s a lot of stuff that could be snuck into a 1200 page document that could change my mind.

Sparhawk2k 02/20/2009 10:12am

I don’t know too much about this but it seems to go way too far.

“A provider of an electronic communication service or remote computing service shall retain for a period of at least two years all records or other information pertaining to the identity of a user of a temporarily assigned network address the service assigns to that user.”

That’s insane. Especially since that refers to individuals and their home WiFi as far as I can tell. I’m all for “protecting the children” but what about privacy? And allowing people to have WiFi without ridiculous restrictions on it that make it unfeasible?

It’s great that you can grab an RSS feed of the items. It would be even cooler if I could populate it from one of my RSS feeds. I’m currently using the shared items in Google Reader quite a bit. I don’t know if this is even possible but it would be amazing if I could have My Political Notebook filled with those items as well as ones I add separately when they don’t come from a feed I’m reading. That might be a bit beyond the scope but I was just thinking it would be nice to have a single place for my friends to find all the political stuff I find interesting…

I don’t think McCain himself is going to be commenting on here so it might be better to word these are more general questions. I keep seeing people doing this on candidates pages.

That being said I don’t really have a solid answer. But the fact that he doesn’t mention it anywhere on his campaign website makes me believe he either doesn’t or isn’t willing to fight for it if he does. Which in my opinion is one of the only good things about him.

Sparhawk2k 07/21/2008 11:11am

While I agree with most of what I’ve browsed through so far and hope it passes I am curious what the total cost is. It seems like most of his objections had to do with growing debt which is reasonable. Though that should be considered when they debate the bill, not when one man decides to block everything.

Sparhawk2k 06/20/2008 9:35am

Nice. Congrats and thanks for all the hard work!

Where exactly in there did you see that? I didn’t even think of fire prevention at first because I was thinking they were going to be protecting against toxic chemicals like lead. Obviously they’re both important but one shouldn’t be at the expense of the other…

Me too. That’s a really cool idea. I didn’t even realize they had such a thing.

Seems straightforward enough. I was rather surprised to find out that they WEREN’T already regulated the same as normal pharmacies.

Sparhawk2k 03/19/2008 11:33am

This seems like a good idea to me. As long as they deal with the need for some people to remain anonymous that is… I especially like the idea of more media attention on these matters so that people might know more about them. I know I’m woefully ignorant of a lot of what is going on in our courts. And if the media has pictures and videos to show I do think they’d be more interested.

Sparhawk2k 03/19/2008 11:27am

Tied vote 3-3 here on OC but no comments… Anybody have anything to say on this one? I’m for energy independence and such but long bills like this make me nervous. I’m never sure how they’re going to live up to their titles.

Sparhawk2k 02/13/2008 5:35pm

Ok, so I for Network Neutrality in general and if this is the best they can do right now I guess it might be a good start. I’m just worried about this being passed and then held up as an excuse for not needing anything better later. And I have seen some arguments showing that putting it in the hands of the FCC could allow them to respond quicker to adapt to what is needed. That’s assuming we have somebody in the FCC who will actually do something though…

Sparhawk2k 02/13/2008 5:28pm

Heh. Obviously not the most important thing in the world but that seems like a crazy long name for a post office…

Sparhawk2k 02/11/2008 8:59pm

I find these sorts of things really amusing. It seems like they spend a lot of time passing random statements which unanimous support. Do other governments do these sorts of things too?

How is this one different from S.1145? The EFF seems to be in support of that one and they seem to be for individuals and innovation… Though they also have reservations about it and see it more as just a step in the right direction.

Sparhawk2k 02/11/2008 8:56pm

I’m adding support for this with reservations. I think patent reform is quite important given how broken the system is. I’m not sure this is the solution though. The patent office and some labor unions seem to be against it but the EFF thinks its a step in the right direction. My patent knowledge tends to lean towards the technology side so I’m going to have to side with the EFF. Though hopefully they’ll come up with something even better so it wont matter.

Also, I don’t know how often year old bills still make it through… I was just surfing around.

Sparhawk2k 01/17/2008 7:34pm

Some of the things mentioned in the technology and innovation document would be amazing for a site like this. I would love to see what could be done when the government is actively working to get more information out there. I think it would actually get more people excited about the idea of participating too.
