An update of sorts…while this resolution is sitting around on the House Calendar waiting for consideration, a group called Americans for Limited Government has filed an FOIA for DHS to provide sources for the “Rightwing Extremism” report. An interim response has just been given this month. The “sources” used by DHS to prove that militia activity is increasing mostly consists of web stories about isolated, mentally disturbed individuals in conflict with police, and also a article called “The Year in Hate” by the Southern Poverty Law Center. Thin evidence indeed, and perhaps there is more information to come.

I also am a little miffed at OpenCongress, who has taken my previous comment from this resolution and posted it under HR 2159, which makes it appear that I support that bill also. Nothing could be farther from the truth!

I have articles on both this resolution and HR 2159 on my blog:

I agree with this bill; I also believe Janet Napolitano should be forthcoming with documentation to support her claims that people on the right are potential terrorists. However, I wonder about the intent of Rep. King in offering this legislation. He is also the sponsor of HR 2159, “Denying Firearms and Explosives to Dangerous Terrorists Act of 2009.” Given Napolitano’s efforts at profiling, it is possible that dissenting Americans on the right could be denied firearms if HR 2159 is enacted. Both of these bills need to be watched carefully.

This resolution is tantamount to the reestablishment of monarchy in this country. This effort is obviously meant to promote the extended presidency of one popular individual whom I will of course not name. You think any member of Congress who didn’t vote for our current President would go along with this idea?

Write, fax or call the representatives on the House Financial Services Committee. Email probably won’t work because most representatives now only accept emails from constituents. I tried writing several at their local offices over Easter break in the hopes that they would see the letters before going back to DC. Sending actual letters to their DC office is the worst option…the letters won’t be seen for a couple of weeks because they need to be irradiated first.

There are now several members of this committee who are also cosponsors, so I think this is an approach worth trying. It’s really up to the Committee to recommend the bill for full House consideration…so reaching them is important.

For heaven’s sake, this bill should be a no-brainer…don’t our elected officials support the Constitution? Hmm, if this one passes, that would already put us on the road to smaller government…think of all the bills that would simply have to be abandoned because they lack constitutional authority. Didn’t these people take an oath to “defend the Constitution?”

The other wonderful thing about this bill…it’s short and uncomplicated. And it cites the Constitution as authority!
