I am writing as your constituent in the 5th Congressional district of Wisconsin. I oppose S.978 - A bill to amend the criminal penalty provision for criminal infringement of a copyright, and for other purposes., and am tracking it using OpenCongress.org, the free public resource website for government transparency and accountability.

Rep. Sensenbrenner, I know that you took $7,000 in the 2010 election cycle from recorded music & music production interest groups who support S.978.

Rep. Sensenbrenner, I know that you took $11,960 in the 2010 election cycle from attorneys & law firms interest groups who support S.978.

Rep. Sensenbrenner, I know that you took $2,000 in the 2010 election cycle from entertainment unions interest groups who support S.978.

I know that the organization Recording Industry Association of America supports S.978

I know that the organization Electronic Frontier Foundation opposes S.978

specifically, this section of the legislation: "‘(ii) the total fair market value of licenses to offer performances of those works would exceed $5,000;’; and",

Here's a summary from OpenCongress.org:

Makes unauthorized web streaming of copyrighted content a felony with a possible penalty of up to 5 years in prison. Illegal streaming of copyrighted content is defined in the bill as an offense that "consists of 10 or more public performances by electronic means, during any 180-day period, of 1 or more copyrighted works" and has a total economic value, either to the copyright holder or the infringer, of at least $2,500.

http://www.savetheinternet.com/frequently-asked-questions

Net Neutrality has been part of the Internet since its inception. Pioneers like Vint Cerf and Sir Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the World Wide Web, always intended the Internet to be a neutral network. And non-discrimination provisions like Net Neutrality have governed the nation's communications networks since the 1920s.

But as a consequence of a 2005 decision by the Federal Communications Commission, Net Neutrality -- the foundation of the free and open Internet -- was put in jeopardy. Now, cable and phone company lobbyists are pushing to block legislation that would reinstate Net Neutrality.

Writing Net Neutrality into law would preserve the freedoms we currently enjoy on the Internet. For all their talk about "deregulation," the cable and phone giants don't want real competition. They want special rules written in their favor.
View Article on OpenCongress

davidmoore wrote: Hi Lucas, David with OC here. Thanks, and you're welcome, and thanks!

I think we're on the same page -- with a foundation of truly open government data, and with more resources for our collaborative web development, OpenCongress could do an even better job of presenting legislative information to you. It's all free, open-source, and non-profit.

But the government doesn't currently make it easy to work with bill text, and we need support from our open user community in order to develop more useful features. OpenGovData is indeed just the start -- it's up to everyone in the transparency community (and political bloggers and issue-based advocacy groups and citizen watchdogs and others) to make it intelligible and effective. That's what we work on every day. Thanks for your support of our mission. davidmoore wrote: @Abaratarrr, David with OC here, I'm sorry to hear that you won't be supporting our work; however, your comment above is incorrect on a couple of fronts. OC is a project of our non-profit organization, the Participatory Politics Foundation, and the Sunlight Foundation is a founding supporter. More importantly, as E.D. of PPF, I assure you we are independent from the government and any political party.

All of the information on OC is open-source and freely available for inspection, sharing, and re-mixing ( http://www.opencongress.org/about/code ). For example, OC aggregates news and blog coverage of bills via automated processes from around the Web, so any blog that mentions a bill by its official number or name will be swept up without favor and included as a link on our site.

That's just one example -- for more information about how OC works and our mission, please visit :: http://www.opencongress.org/about .
