H.R.226 - Broadcaster Freedom Act of 2009
- moionfire : The fairness doctrine doesn't force broadcasters to "promote" other opinions. It forces them to present opposing views in order to give people an accurate understanding of other opinions. Using the word "promote" assumes the broadcasters have to agree with every opinion that is presented to the public...
- rememberyourhistory : You people should really read this one. It doesn't say anything about limiting speech, or what you can or can't say. It says if there is a controversial issue, such as an election or a war, the broadcasters can not freely "push" their own agenda over public airwaves. If they spend time on one view, they need to use the same amount of time for the opposing view.
I believe in this one wholeheartedly, see William Randolph Hearst, American newspaper magnate and leading newspaper publisher in the late 1800s, the Spanish–American War and Yellow Journalism. His quote was "You furnish the pictures, I'll furnish the war." Look it up. People who don't want to hear opposing views, well you should look up Fascism.

H.R.414 - Camera Phone Predator Alert Act
- silverfang77 : A law like that would be useless because just about any phone can be hacked and the camera sounds deleted.
- mryanbrown : What does sales have to do with anything? Most phones have the option of turning a sound on. People leave it disabled, just as some people disable it on digital cameras. Holy crap we live in a world of choice and personal responsibility.

H.R.25 - Fair Tax Act of 2009
- cbass94 : With current sales tax rates, the small amount of bartering that does happen makes almost no difference in the taxes that the government collects. Not to mention, the fact that sales tax rates are already low helps to keep bartering to a minimum. If people had to pay more directly to the government on every transaction, they simply wouldn't make the transaction with money and that would force the government to raise the taxes even higher thus further reinforcing the cycle. Ultimately, they'd end up going back to the system we have today. The bottom line is the government needs to use what they have more effectively not simply try and get it another way.
- mindaika : This is a not-subtle means of increase taxes on the poor and decreasing them on the rich. Fortunately, this bill has little chance of passing.

S.371 - Respecting States Rights and Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act of 2009
- TheBatman : I got stopped traveling through Alabama from Florida. When I travel, I ALWAYS carry.
They grilled me and grilled me like I was some sort of criminal. I can legally carry in my vehicle, in it's holster, that is 3+ movements away.
We should not have to go through that just because we want to protect ourselves.
- rsh1962 : All laws only affect law-abiding citizens. Bad guys dont follow the laws, so any gun control law only affects the honest people trying to defend thier families. If one state says you may carry a firearm, why must you disarm when crossing state lines?

H.R.875 - Food Safety Modernization Act of 2009
- PatMeaney : Part of the problem of food production depending so heavily on oil is the growing use of GMO foods many of which are modified seeds that produce much higher yields. They are designed to be resistant to pesticides allowing crops to be sprayed heavily with highly toxic pesticides such as Roundup and Atrazine. Farmers then need three times more water to irrigate GMO crops, resulting in further drainage of the world's fresh water supplies.
To sever the relationship between oil and food will require a major paradigm shift in how we produce food. In the words of Richard Hienberg (2005): "Given the fact that fossil fuels are limited in quantity and we are already in view of the global oil production peak, the debate over the potential productivity chemical-gene engineered agriculture and agroecological farming may be relatively pointless. We must turn to a food system that is less fuel reliant, even if it does prove to be less productive."
**All of this is from the above link**
- PatMeaney : In contrast to the paradigm shift in Cuba, the U.S. government is continuing to provide generous subsidies to agribusiness, thus postponing the day when a transformation in farming methods can be set in motion. For example, there were three types of agricultural subsidies and in 2008: the government paid our $12.2 billion in direct subsidies with 62% going to commercial farms; $5.2 billion in commodity payments with 76% going to commercial farms; $2.7 billion in conservation payments with 33% going to commercial farms.

S.414 - Credit Card Accountability Responsibility and Disclosure Act of 2009
- dbmalkie6 : There should be a limit to credit. American's live beyond their means which is part of the reason we are in this financial state. The government is continuing this same practice with tax payer money. Will this really reduce the cost of credit? No. This industry will make up the profit lost from this bill by other means. I have heard several examples of potentially new "fees" to make up the difference. Interest rates are already being hiked in advance of this bill. At the end you will see rates already hiked up, and new "fees" being imposed on the consumer. What did we get in the end? Nothing but wasted taste payer dollars! 70% of our economy is consumer spending - 70%. This consumer cannot spend my hard earned money because the government has already spent it for me. Until the consumer starts spending and the government stops, you will see little improvement in our economy.
- TLee1 : Regarding the interest rates charged by credit card companie: they should be rolled back to comply with states' usury laws. If that can'r be done, the federal government should set a ceiling on all interest rates, never to exceed "x %." Anything above 15% is usurious.

S.425 - Food Safety and Tracking Improvement Act
- mommachef : with no sarcasm at all:
did i miss reference to any fees?
i saw the penalty fee to be levied for distributing a recalled item.
were there others?
and if not, are you working on the assumption all farmers will be required to pay into this system?
if that is your fear, then let's work to prevent THAT, rather than preventing the whole bill.
you say the fda and usda should do their jobs. it has been my experience that the people who work for the agencies would love to be more effective and are struggling due to underfunding and under-staffing.
this bill, as i read it, is about about giving the fda and the usda more power to accomplish their goals. now let's get the authors and/or committees to work on the funding so that the agencies need not (a) assess burdening fees or (b) turn to monsanto and like for operating cash.
- mommachef : first, this is the page for s.425, not hr 875.
second, while i agree that monsanto's access to power and the frightening unknowns of gmo's deserve great alarm, that is not what this bill is about.
this bill, s.425, is about giving teeth to the inspection agencies that came out of Sinclair's "The Jungle".
this bill is trying to make the world a better place, not the monsanto-controlled place of which you fear.
this bill is a chance for us to pull ourselves up from our fears and use the government to a good end: better enforcement of a federal issue.
this bill, s.425, is not without flaws and i believe could do more for protecting small farmers. but, i personally believe, giving the usda and fda some dentures is better than leaving them with next to no teeth at all.
