H.R.1024 - Uniting American Families Act of 2009
- stebbinsd : Why is this bill still in the committees? After reading about the horrors that Shirley Tan had to go through, this bill should have passed Congress, been signed by Obama, and taken effect in a single week! It should have passed by voice vote!
I am holding all 535 Congressmen personally responsible, in their individual capacities, for condoning this persecution (because that's just what it is: Persecution) until this bill gets passed.
- fixius73 : I am an American citizen that now lives in Canada with my Canadian partner of 7 years. We lived to gether in the U.S for about 5 years, until she had to go back and there was no way of her getting any kind of legal status. We are lucky though. I am from Washington State and we now live on Vancouver island, which is just a ferry ride home for me, but I can't see my friends and family every day, I gave up a great paying job to move to Canada where I don't get paid as much as I made before and the cost of living is much higher. the quality of my life and that of my partner is now much lower than it was while living in my home country. While I have had to go through a lot to be with my partner, there are families that aren't as lucky as I am. They are literally oceans apart, and thousands of miles away from each other. Everyone needs to support this bill and stand up for equality. Contact your representatives and let them know that you support this bill and they should too.

S.424 - Uniting American Families Act of 2009
- danraposo : Bravo!
May God bless you and your work Senator Leahy.
This country needs more people like you...
- loukavar : As an ordained minister, I view this legislation as a long overdue act of social justice. Families need to be supported no matter how that family is constituted.

H.R.1269 - Marriage Protection Act of 2009
- jdblue82 : Hah! This is the most ridiculous bill ever... don't they teach Republicans how to read the Constitution? Congress cannot determine or change the jurisdiction of the federal judicial system because as an independent branch of government (checks & balances people...) the Judiciary obtains its power and jurisdiction via the Constitution, same as Congress does.
- LibertarianLady : Here's a better idea: Let's not require people to ask the government permission to marry (straight, gay , or other). Nobody should ever for any reason have to ask the government permission (in the form of a license) to marry and pay (and in some states wait or be denied) for said license. These licenses have been used to deny interracial couples, those with "bad" genes, and disabilities the right to marry.
The government should not be involved in anybody's marriage, straight or gay. Make marriage a private contract between the couple and God if they desire a God to be in the contract. Christian marriage will still be only 1 man and 1 woman. Noting changes.
Nothing that you get a license for is a right. The definition of a license implies that the activity is a privilege subject to the government's jurisdiction.

H.J.Res.37 - Proposing an amendment to the Constitution of the United States relating to marriage.
- LibertarianLady : How about the government get completely out of the marriage licensing business? A license means that the activity is a privilege that you have to ask (and pay) for permission to do, and possibly be denied. Marriage is a RIGHT. I am sick of the social engineering aspect of people being treated differently when it comes to taxes based on their marital status.
For the Christians:
Why would you want to have to ask the government for their permission to have a sacramental marriage? Isn't marriage just between you, your spouse, and God? Do you really want your pastor saying "by the power vested in me by the state of __ and God I now pronounce you..."? I would think that only God would have the power to sanction a marriage, not the state too.
For the non-Christians:
Why should anybody, gay or straight, ever have to ask the government's permission to marry? Let's make it an entirely private institution.
I think marriage is under the 9th A.
- foundingson : keep you lifestyle private, another way to suck up benefits from the taxpayer. Also why always trying to proselytize children in school? Other than cannot reproduce.

H.R.1283 - Military Readiness Enhancement Act of 2009
- ecsclark : I am a bartender in a heterosexual based strip club in Fayetteville, North Carolina. I am constantly witnessing heterosexual MILITARY men engaged in perverse acts of all kinds. Homosexual and Heterosexual. Perhaps in a perfect world no one would ever have to witness anything "disturbing," but seeing as when signing up for the military men automatically know that they are going to kill or be killed, be forced to raid places where women are raped, see children who are malnurished, and rescue groups of people facing genocide, starvation, and disease. . . Trust me. . . Two gay men going at it on a flight deck are the least of our military's concern. Get a grip.
- ecsclark : I completely agree with your more articulate views on the subject. I personally believe that all people were created equally and that all people should be treated that way. Just as a personal note. . . I think that allowing Hellfire Preacherman to cause you to refer to him as the "ignorant rebel" or an "ignorant sack of southern inbreed trash" is just allowing him to bring yourself down to his level. I am a proud, beautiful, intelligent, southern woman. It is not pleasant to realize that people have such views of my southern comrades as you do. I am sure that you can relate.
