H.R.1024 - Uniting American Families Act of 2009
- Mikeyf : My partner and I are in the exact same position (I'm the foreign national, we have been together for 12 years, there should be no concerns of how to prove a true union.
We just need the law to be changed, I pay my taxes (at the single rate)I earn a very good living but we have live part of our live in the dark. It's time to correct the law to include same sex couples.
- patches8 : I can't understand why people would oppose to this bill. This bill has nothing to do with gay marriage. Gay people just want to stay with their partners, just like any heterosexual people do. You can't just let people fall in love and then split them apart. If other 20 countries could do it, I am sure America can also do this. Please support and pass UAFA!

- WendellR : Thank you, Senator. My partner and I need this bill if, after 5 years, we're not to be separated permanently. Please help us and thousands like us keep our families intact.

H.R.1269 - Marriage Protection Act of 2009
- jdblue82 : Hah! This is the most ridiculous bill ever... don't they teach Republicans how to read the Constitution? Congress cannot determine or change the jurisdiction of the federal judicial system because as an independent branch of government (checks & balances people...) the Judiciary obtains its power and jurisdiction via the Constitution, same as Congress does.
- LibertarianLady : Here's a better idea: Let's not require people to ask the government permission to marry (straight, gay , or other). Nobody should ever for any reason have to ask the government permission (in the form of a license) to marry and pay (and in some states wait or be denied) for said license. These licenses have been used to deny interracial couples, those with "bad" genes, and disabilities the right to marry.
The government should not be involved in anybody's marriage, straight or gay. Make marriage a private contract between the couple and God if they desire a God to be in the contract. Christian marriage will still be only 1 man and 1 woman. Noting changes.
Nothing that you get a license for is a right. The definition of a license implies that the activity is a privilege subject to the government's jurisdiction.

H.J.Res.37 - Proposing an amendment to the Constitution of the United States relating to marriage.
- LibertarianLady : How about the government get completely out of the marriage licensing business? A license means that the activity is a privilege that you have to ask (and pay) for permission to do, and possibly be denied. Marriage is a RIGHT. I am sick of the social engineering aspect of people being treated differently when it comes to taxes based on their marital status.
For the Christians:
Why would you want to have to ask the government for their permission to have a sacramental marriage? Isn't marriage just between you, your spouse, and God? Do you really want your pastor saying "by the power vested in me by the state of __ and God I now pronounce you..."? I would think that only God would have the power to sanction a marriage, not the state too.
For the non-Christians:
Why should anybody, gay or straight, ever have to ask the government's permission to marry? Let's make it an entirely private institution.
I think marriage is under the 9th A.
- foundingson : keep you lifestyle private, another way to suck up benefits from the taxpayer. Also why always trying to proselytize children in school? Other than cannot reproduce.

H.R.1283 - Military Readiness Enhancement Act of 2009
- tboome : There is another, although not frequently discussed, reason for abolishing DADT and that is PTSD as a result of Military Sexual Trauma. While current statistic show this as a larger problem for women than men, I believe that the numbers for men go under reported due to the additional social stigma, especially for heterosexual men. As a man who was sexually assaulted in the military, it was not a homosexual but a heterosexual superior with a wife and kids who used his authority to force me into having sex with him under risk of being labeled a homosexual. Since the doctor patient confidentiality is not applicable in the military the stress from having to serve with the perpetrator of the assault results in stress, depression, and PTSD. Allowing homosexuals and bisexuals to serve openly may not eliminate the problem completely, but it will remove a major obstacle to reporting it.
- Icon : The number of cosponsors doesn't really matter in terms of lawmaking, but it's a helpful way for the Speaker (or Minority Leader) to gauge how much support a particular bill has so the know whether or not they should push for it.
The bill doesn't need 218 cosponsors, but if it has 218 cosponsors it sends a signal that it's probably safe to put it on the floor and call a vote.
The real reason this bill has not come to the floor for a vote is the Chairman of the Armed Services Committee is Ike Skelton, who doesn't want to see the bill passed and won't let it get through committee.
Based on some statements from Barney Frank and Nancy Pelosi, it may end up getting passed as an amendment to this year's Defense Authorization Bill, making this bill redundant.

H.R.1913 - Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2009
- RepubliCAN2010 : ok wow, if u ACTUALLY READ THE TREATY it was an OPINIONATED statement that was written BY Joel Barlow and signed by Adams...but if u would have done your history, he was NOT THE PRESIDENT until 1797...which u have incorrectly stated 1796...also i would like to add that Adams got only 1 TERM!!!! ...Thomas Jefferson got 2 terms. Why?..because he was a much more knowlegable and capable leader than adams and he was against the treaty..in fact he BROKE IT!!!(1801). And just because one man signs a bill he does not speak for the people or the other founding fathers he only speaks for himself. By signing the treaty Adams was giving his agreement to the treaty by endorsment (whether he actually read it is another story...kinda like this healthcare crap nobody bothered to read).
- BelovedEmpress : NO - THIS COUNTRY WAS NOT FOUNDED ON THE CHRISTIAN FAITH REGARDLESS OF HOW CHRISTIAN THE FOUNDERS MAY HAVE CLAIMED TO BE.
"The government of the United States of America is not in any sense founded on the Christian Religion."
~~ Joel Barlow, in the Treaty of Tripoli, signed by President John Adams (1796)
