David Wu has been a Democratic member of the U.S. House of Representatives for Oregon, representing the state's 1st Congressional District, since 1999. The district includes a small section fo western Multnomah and all of Yamhill, Columbia, Clatsop, and Washington counties. (map).

Healthcare professional training
In May 2007, the House Committee on Science and Technology passed the 10,000 Trained by 2010 Act (H.R. 1467), sponsored by Rep. Wu and Reps. Phil Gingrey (R-Ga.), Bart Gordon (D-Tenn.), and Ralph Hall (R-Tex.). The act would authorize the National Science Foundation (NSF) to provide grants to colleges and universities geared toward applied health and medical informatics training.[1]
The Technology Innovation and Manufacturing Stimulation Act
On April 17, 2007 Rep. David Wu introduced the Technology Innovation and Manufacturing Stimulation Act of 2007, which is a bill intended to provide funding for fiscal years 2008 through 2010 for research in manufacturing technology advancements. On May 3, 2007, the House passed the bill in a 385-23 vote.[2]
Bio
Background
Wu was born April 8, 1955 in Taiwan, and moved to the United States with his family in 1961. He received a bachelor of science degree from Stanford University in 1977, and attended medical school] at Harvard University. Wu also received a Juris Doctor degree from Yale University in 1982. Wu is the first Taiwanese-American to be elected to the US Congress.
Prior to being elected a US Representative, Wu served as a clerk for a federal judge and co-founded a law firm, Cohen & Wu, which primarily served the high tech sector in Oregon's "Silicon Forest."
Congressional Career
Wu was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1998, replacing fellow Democrat Elizabeth Furse, and began serving in 1999 with the 106th Congress.
In the 2004 election, Wu was challenged by Goli Ameri, a Republican Iranian-American. On October 12, 2004, Congressman Wu admitted that he had been disciplined for attempted sexual assault by Stanford officials while a student at the school in 1976. Ameri was reluctant at first to campaign on the issue, but toward the end of the campaign focused on the issue heavily. This had little effect on the final outcome as Wu garnered 58% of the vote in the 2004 race, compared to Ameri's 38%, and 4% for Dean Wolf, the Constitution Party candidate. [1]
2006 elections
In 2006, the Republicans nominated Derrick Kitts to face Wu in his November 2006 bid for reelection. (See U.S. congressional elections in 2006) [2] Wu retained his seat.
