The Federal Employees Paid Parental Leave Act of 2008 (H.R. 5781) would have given federal employees four weeks of paid parental leave to use as part of their 12 weeks of total parental leave.

Summary


To provide that 8 of the 12 weeks of parental leave made available to a Federal employee shall be paid leave, and for other purposes.

Federal employees are given 12 weeks of unpaid parental leave.[1] The bill would have

  • Provided federal employees with four weeks of paid parental leave out of their 12 weeks of total parental leave.[1]
  • Given the Office of Personnel Management the option of extending the paid leave period to eight weeks.[1]
  • Allowed employees to use sick leave to cover part of their parental leave period without needing to demonstrate a medical need.[1]

Passage in House

Despite a veto threat from the White House, the House passed the bill on June 19, 2008.[2]
