""It was always clear that the PROTECT I.P. Act [PIPA] needed to be perfected, and that legitimate concerns needed to be addressed before this bill could move forward. Given this and my constituents' concerns, it was my intention to vote against cloture of this bill. With the majority leader's decision to postpone Tuesday's vote on the PROTECT I.P. Act, I am withdrawing my co-sponsorship to await the resolution of the outstanding issues. However, I still believe that online theft is a serious issue, and that Congress does need to make certain that our laws adequately protect the interests of rights holders." http://www.publicbroadcasting.net/wabe/news.newsmain/article/1/0/1896203/Atlanta./SOPA.and.PIPA.Where.Georgia%27s.Representatives.Stand

I spoke with a staffer on 1/19/12 at 11am. He mentioned that Kristen's position hadn't changed, but was working with Senator Reid to address the points of the Act that weren't perfect. I reiterated my concerns even with changes to PIPA and SOPA and the staffer said he would let her know.

As of 2:45 EST (1/18), spoke to a staffer who said that her current position was that of a co-sponsor and she is working with Senator Reid to address issues with the bill.

The staffer I spoke to (1/18/12) said that she's received over 200 calls today and that she's taking that into serious consideration. He said that he would not be surprised if she changed her position. I asked when I could call back to see if her position changed and he said by the end of the day. Her office closes at 5 pm EST.

Via email on PIPA, on 1/19/12, she says "There are a number of provisions in the bill that I am concerned about, particularly language affecting Domain Name Servers (DNS).  Legislation as wide-ranging as this needs a more open and thorough review from all sides of the debate.  I am pleased that Senator Leahy — the author of the bill — has said he is open to changes to address this and other issues.  The current language in the bill needs to be improved before I could consider supporting its final passage."

On 1/13 the Senator still supported the act, [http://amandapeyton.com/blog/2012/01/my-call-to-senator-schumers-office-on-pipa-its-so-much-worse-than-i-thought/ according to one of his constituents]
I called Senator Schumer's DC office on 1/19/12 at 11:11am. I got a recording saying that his staff was busy but would be with me shortly. I waited 3 minutes on hold. Then the phone started ringing again. 20 rings later no one had answered, so I hung up. I called back at 11:27am to the same recording. This time I got a second recording after 3 minutes of hold music that said that the stuff was still busy but would be with me shortly and thank you for holding. Again after three more minutes or so of hold music, the phone started ringing again. This time after about 6 rings, the phone went to a busy tone. I'm curious if they are just receiving so many calls that they can't keep up or if they've stopped picking up the phones. I hope it's not the second because that would be a terrible Senator and I will NOT vote for him next time around. He's already on thin ice with me on this one. I then called his district phone and logged my concerns there. The staffer thanked me and asked for my zip code. That was it.
+

+
As of 2:40 EST (1/18), I spoke to a nice staffer who logged my opposition and informed me that Sen. Schumer has been meeting with e-commerce businesses and other individuals and is assessing his position.
+

+
The staffer I spoke to at 12pm (1/18/12) was incredibly hostile. I called, identified myself as a constituent and said that I opposed the PIPA. He asked for my zip code and once I gave it- he hung up. I called back and coincidentally was connected to the same staffer. I told him he hung up on me before I was able to even ask my senators position. He briefly told be that the senator has received "a number" of phone calls since Friday from constituents in opposition of the bill. I asked for that number and he ignored my question. He said that the senator is taking the phone calls into consideration. Then he hung up on me again.

Grassroots whip-counting on Internet censorship.
Senate whip count  · Senate contact log
Tips for contacting senators  · Participate
This page is an OpenCongress community project. We are seeking to get each U.S. senator on-record with their position on the Protect IP Act of 2011 (known as "whipping the vote" in DC-speak). By forcing votes out into the open, the public has a greater opportunity to give their senators feedback before the vote.

You can help by selecting a senator below and contacting them by phone or email (via OpenCongress' Contact Congress feature). When calling on the phone, be sure to identify yourself as a constituent, and give your mailing address for verification. Please be polite, and ask the senator's staff what the senator's position is on the Protect IP Act. If they indicate their position, use the key below to categorize the answer. If they don't, urge them to vote "no."

If someone has already recorded the senator's position, contact them again! The more calls/emails they get, the more they'll pay attention. If there position hasn't changed, please note your contact on the Protect IP Act Senate contact log so everyone can track their responses.

As you may know, the Senate is scheduled to begin consideration of this legislation later this month, and I intend to approach the debate and amendment process with an open mind.
