Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006

The Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006 (UIGEA) is a U.S. law which was approved in late 2006, and co-sponsored by Reps. Goodlatte and Jim Leach (R-Iowa). It was added to the Security and Accountability For Every Port Act of 2006 via conference committee and was signed by President Bush on October 13, 2006. The Act prohibits the transfer of funds from a financial institution to an Internet gambling site, with the notable exceptions of "fantasy" sports, online lotteries, and horse/harness racing.

Bio

Born September 22, 1952 in Holyoke, Massachusetts, Goodlatte received a B.A. from Bates College in Lewiston, Maine in 1974. He also holds a J.D. from Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia (1977). Goodlatte was an attorney in prviate practice before becoming a staff aide for U.S. Representative M. Caldwell Butler of Virginia, from 1977-1979.

Goodlatte was Chairman of the 6th district Virginia Republican Committee (1983-88) and Roanoke City Republican Committee Chairman (1980-83).

Congressional career

He was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1992.
