Budget, Taxes and Government Spending

Guthrie supports making the Bush tax cuts of 2001 and 2003 permanent. He said, on his campaign website, that he will fight against "burdensome regulation and taxation that serve as a wet-blanket on America's small business owners". ^[1]

Healthcare

Guthrie strongly opposes a universal health care system for the U.S. He does, however, support lawsuit reform to lower the cost of healthcare, policy options that will provide consumers with more healthcare options, policies that improve the portability of insurance, and health policy that deals with chronic disease. He is also a strong believer in the benefits of preventive care.^[1]

War on Terror

Guthrie believes that decisions about the war should be left to the commanders in the field, rather than politicians. He opposes legislation that weakens surveillance laws, and allowing trial lawyers to sue telecommunications companies that help the government track terrorists who are making calls to the U.S. He also supports legislation that will support the families of veterans, and legislation that provides troops with necessary equipment while in the field. ^[1]

Bio

Brett Guthrie was born February 18, 1964, in Florence, Ala. He is married to the former Beth Clemmons, and they have three children. Guthrie graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point with a bachelor's degree in economics, and he served as Field Artillery Officer in the 101st Airborne Division - Air Assault. He later earned a master's degree in public and private management from Yale University. After leaving the military, Guthrie took the position of vice president at Trace Die Cast, the manufacturing company owned by his father and based in Bowling Green, Ky. In 1998, Guthrie was elected to the Kentucky State Senate, and he served there until he entering the 2008 race for the U.S. House.^[2]

2008 elections

Guthrie was the Republican nominee to replace retiring Rep. Ron Lewis (R-Ky.) in the 2008 congressional elections, and went on to defeat Democratic nominee David Boswell in the November 2008 general election.^[3]
