Bio
Myrick is the former President and CEO of Myrick Advertising and Public Relations and Myrick Enterprises. Before Congress, she served on the Charlotte City Council and was mayor of the City of Charlotte from 1987-1991.
Congressional career
In 1994 Myrick was elected to the House succeeding five-term incumbent Alex McMillan. The 9th district hasn't elected a Democrat to Congress since 1953, but the 1990s round of redistricting which created the black-majority 12th cut out a large portion of Charlotte from the 9th and added portions of heavily Republican Gaston County in its place.
Myrick is one of the most conservative members of the House. She chaired the Republican Study Committee in the 108th Congress. The RSC is "a group of House Republicans that are organized for the purpose of advancing a conservative economic and social agenda for America."[1]
On February 22, 2006, Myrick became one of the leading Republican opponents to the sale of port operations at six major American ports along the East Coast to Dubai Ports World, a state-owned company from the United Arab Emirates. In a letter to President Bush, Myrick wrote: "In regards to selling American ports to the United Arab Emirates, not just NO-but HELL NO!" 1
2006 elections
In 2006, the Democrats nominated Bill Glass to face Myrick in her November 2006 bid for reelection. (See U.S. congressional elections in 2006) [2] Myrick retained her seat.
