Bio

Denny Heck represented the 17th District in the Washington State House of Representatives from 1977 to 1985 and acted as Majority Leader during this time and co-chaired the House Education Committee. He served as Chief of Staff to Washington Governor Booth Gardner from 1990-1993. In 1993 Heck co-founded TVW and in 2009 was awarded the "James Madison Award" for his role in this.[1]

Dennis Heck was asked to "Briefly describe [his] vision for the nation’s energy future and the region’s" by Columbian staff writer Kathie Durbin. In his response, Heck emphasised that "It is imperative to reduce our reliance and dependence on fossil fuels, for improved environmental health and importantly, national security" and added that decreasing use of oil could be good for the economy, saying that there are "incredible opportunities in Southwest Washington to grow our economy through clean energy projects and the creation of green jobs." He additionally stated, with regards to the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico that "we must hold British Petroleum responsible for the greatest environmental disaster in our country’s history."

Heck (who starts talking at 2:40) says that “climate change is very real and we have to take it very seriously” and that “who's at risk is you and me, I think peoples health is at risk and I think society's at risk and economic systems are at risk”, “single most important thing we can do is reduce our consumption of fossil fuel”, emphasising that not only would it aid the planet, but it would also “get us out of under the thumb of people who hate us” and that we should “embrace the incredible job creating opportunities associated with moving in the direction of clean energy and green jobs”.

Heck (who begins talking at 2:48) states “I would have voted for it, I don't think it was a perfect bill, but I'd have voted for it”, saying that he can't justify morally children with pre-existing conditions being excluded from health insurance, as well as agreeing with the increased coverage for Americans provided within the bill.
