Bio
Whitfield was born in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, on May 25, 1943, and was educated at the University of Kentucky, Wesley Theological Seminary and American University. He served in the Army Reserve, and was a lawyer, business executive, business owner and member of the Kentucky House of Representatives before entering the House in 1995.

In 2006, the Democrats nominated Tom Barlow to face Whitfield in his November 2006 bid for reelection. (See U.S. congressional elections in 2006) [1] Whitfield retained his seat.
