Barela believes in limited government and lower taxes. He cites Martin Heinrich’s support of such policies as cap and trade as an indication that he is philosophically “far left.”

The Process of Passing Health Bill Shameful. Jon Barela for Congress. 04/04/10. <http://jonbarela.com/uploads/FileLinks/fb14502126ad4c7db8605199c15d6774/The%20Process%20of%20Passing%20Health%20Bill%20Shameful.pdf>.
Barela does not support the recently passed health care reform bill. He believes it will increase health care costs and diminish the quality of American health care. Barela writes, "This health care legislation, with a price tag between $940 billion and $2.5 trillion, reflects the misguided priorities that are dominating Washington today."
Reps. Cautious on Pelosi Strategy. ABQJournal.com. 03/17/10. <http://jonbarela.com/uploads/FileLinks/fb14502126ad4c7db8605199c15d6774/Journal.pdf>.
Barela believes that there should not be a hidden vote on the health care reform bill. Pelosi suggested that they not record individual vote, but Barela said that is it either a good bill or a bill that needs work and, therefore, there shouldn’t need to be a hidden vote.
Healthcare. Jon Barela for Congress. 2009. <http://jonbarela.com/HealthCare.aspx>.
Instead of government-run health care, Barela wants other reforms. He supports creating tax incentives for those employers who provide health care for employees and legislating that insurance companies provide health care to those with pre-existing conditions.
