Iraq War

Meek voted against the Authorization for Use of Military Force Against Iraq Resolution of 2002 that started the Iraq War.[1]

For more information see the chart of U.S. House of Representatives votes on the Iraq War.

Environmental record

Representative Meek supported the interests of the American Wilderness Coalition 100% for four years from 2003 to 2006, an organization that “seeks to expand and protect our National Wilderness Preservation System." However, Representative Meek was one of the few who didn’t support at all the interests of the American Wind Energy Association, a national trade association which “promotes wind energy as a clean source of electricity for consumers around the world.” Nevertheless, Representative Meek has been pretty consistent about supporting many pro-environment interest groups.

Gun Issues

Representative Meek is very lukewarm and inconsistent on voting about gun issues, supporting the interests of the Gun Owners of America and the interests of the Brady Campaign to Prevent gun Violence. As a result, Representative Meek got a grade of D in 2006 and F in 2004, based on his lifetime voting records on gun issues (which is ranked irrespective of party affiliation.)

Abortion Issues

Representative Meek is generally pro-choice. He voted nay on “Prohibit Partial-Birth Abortion bill” twice in 2003, and voted nay on “Abortion Pain Bill” in 2006, which sought to "ensure that women seeking an abortion are fully informed regarding the pain experienced by their unborn child."

Biography

Meek was born September 6, 1966 in Miami, Florida. He was educated at Florida A&M University, and was a member of the Florida House of Representatives and the Florida Senate before entering the House.

He was elected to the U.S. House in 2002, succeeding his mother, Congresswoman Carrie Meek, who retired. He is a member of the Congressional Black Caucus and a member of the "30 Something Working Group", a House caucus that consists of democratic members in their 30's.
