Mike Whalen was the Republican Party nominee in the 2006 congressional election for the First Congressional District of Iowa (map). He unsuccessfully ran against Democrat Bruce Braley to replace Rep. Jim Nussle, who ran for governor.

Biography
Mike Whalen was born on May 27, 1954. He received his bachelors degree from the University of Illinois in 1975. He also holds a law degree from Harvard University, graduating with honors in 1978. He gained fame by starting Heart of America Restaurants and Inns (HOARI), owner of several hotels and restaurants (including the Iowa Machine Shed chain) in the Midwest.
He is married and the father of two children. [1] [2]
