The Massachusetts Class I Senate seat became vacant when Senator Edward M. Kennedy died on August 25, 2009.  The special election to fill his seat for the remainder of the unexpired term (which ends in 2012) has been set for January 19, 2010.  The primary is on December 8, 2009.
