Vivian Beckerle is the Democratic Party nominee in the 2006 congressional election for the First Congressional District of Alabama (map). She is running against Republican Jo Bonner.

Biography
Beckerle, a former Republican, served for 12 years as the Mobile County Treasurer, from 1989 to 2001. She spent 20 years in the Army, retiring as a Major. She also a Deacon of Hillcrest Baptist Church married, and has one daughter.
When asked why she left the Republican Party for the Democratic side, Beckerly said, “When I realized that the voices in the party were actually speaking against the likes of my brother who was a labor union member, I simply could not remain in their ranks. I take very seriously the idea of being my brother’s keeper, and I could no longer support a party that would deprive him of a livable wage, retirement, and healthcare benefits."
