Speakers
- Judith Freeman - Judith Freeman is the co-founder and Executive Director of the New Organizing Institute http://www.neworganizing.com a training, research and development organization for technology-enabled organizers, activists, staff, and leaders. Recently, she was on leave from NOI to work for the Obama campaign's new media operation. Previously, she was the senior political strategist at the AFL-CIO, where she also co-founded the Analyst Institute. During the 2004 presidential election, she worked on the Kerry campaign's internet operations. She advises political campaigns, unions and non-profit organizations on organizing, targeting, strategy and technology infrastructure. She worked for 5 years in technology at the University of Chicago where she also organized with social justice organizations.
- Ben Pershing - Ben Pershing writes the Capitol Briefing blog http://www.blog.washingtonpost.com/capitol-briefing/ on washingtonpost.com. He also writes the daily Rundown blog http://voices.washingtonpost.com/political-browser/ on washingtonpost.com's Political Browser. The Rundown is a summary of political events and happenings in government and it also links out to a variety of sources across the web. Prior to joining washingtonpost.com, Pershing worked at Roll Call, where he was Deputy Editor overseeing all Congressional coverage. During his ten year tenure with Roll Call, Pershing also served as a Senior Staff Writer and was the author of Roll Call's “Heard on the Hill". Pershing holds a B.A. in Political Science from the University of California, Berkeley. He lives in Washington, DC.
- David Popp - David Popp currently serves as the Press Secretary for Congressman Robert E. Latta (R-OH). Prior to working for Congressman Latta, David was a Correspondent for Talk Radio News Service in Washington, D.C. and also served in various staff positions in the United States House of Representatives and the Ohio State Senate. In 2008, David worked with Congressman Latta to establish the Republican New Media Caucus which serves as a working group for House Republican Members and Staff. The Republican New Media Caucus has over 50 member offices and holds monthly briefings on a wide variety of new media items and practices. Congressman Latta serves as Co-Chair of the Republican New Media Caucus with Congressman Rob Wittman (R-VA), Congressman John Culberson (R-TX) and Congressman Buck McKeon (R-CA). David is a native of Wilmington, Ohio and a graduate of Ohio University.
- Tim Hysom - Tim Hysom serves as CMF's Director for Communications and Technology Services. In this capacity, he conducts and oversees CMF's grant and contract work in these areas in addition to serving as a trainer and consultant. Tim manages the Communicating with Congress research project and is the author of Communicating with Congress: Recommendations for Improving the Democratic Dialogue. He was project manager and a contributor to the 2007 Gold Mouse Report: Lessons from the Best Web Sites on Capitol Hill and the 2006 Gold Mouse Report: Recognizing the Best Web Sites on Capitol Hill. Tim also conducts training programs for congressional staff on constituent mail and the strategic use of technology. Most recently Tim was a Legislative Assistant to a Member of Congress. During his time on Capitol Hill he developed deep expertise in web design, strategic management of constituent communications, and all other aspects of congressional office technology. Prior to coming to Washington, Tim worked for Autodesk, Inc. in various marketing and communications roles, as well as serving in the district office of a Member of Congress. Tim has a BA with honors from the Dominican University of California and is currently completing a Master of Public Administration program at American University in Washington, D.C.
