Senate Finance Mark-Up, Week Two

September 29, 2009 - by Donny Shaw

Week two of the Senate Finance Committee mark-up begins today. Watch it live here:

Here is the full text of bill they are considering:

America’s Healthy Future Act of 2009

If the Committee can work out a health care bill that can win the 60 votes needed to overcome a Republican filibuster, their bill will become the basis for what moves through the Senate, conference committee and finally becomes law. If they can’t produce a bill that holds together that level of support, Senate Democrats will likely push forward with a Democrats-only bill, containing a public option, that they can pass with a tactic that lets them block a filibutser, known as budget reconciliation.

All the big votes in the Committee are yet to come. Chairman Sen. Max Baucus [D, MT] is hoping to have the mark-up finished by Friday. Before that, there will be votes on the public option, Sen. Olympia Snowe’s [R, ME] public option “trigger,” abortion funding, eligibility for undocumented immigrants and more.

The public option vote will happen today. Debate on it has already begun. For reference, here is a link to the co-op provision that Sen. Baucus has proposed instead of a public option in the bill the Committee is considering.

You can browse the hundreds of amendment pending to the bill in this Google spreadsheet provided by or in pdfs from the Finance Committee.
