Dems Will Have 60 Votes for Passing the Unemployment Extension Bill Next Week

July 12, 2010 - by Donny Shaw

Apparently West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin’s chat last night with election attorneys didn’t convince him to go ahead with appointing an interim replacement for Sen. Robert Byrd [D, WV] before the legislature in his state meets on Thursday. Here’s the latest on the situation, from the AP:

West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin says he’ll make a temporary appointment to the late Robert C. Byrd’s Senate seat by Sunday.

Manchin said Monday he could announce his pick as early as Friday.

That means this entire week will go by without any Senate work on the unemployment insurance extension bill unless Sen. Ben Nelson [D, NE] or another Republican changes their position on it. It does sound pretty certain that there will be a replacement for Byrd by the beginning of next week, but, in that case, even under the best-case scenario, it will take the Senate until the end of next week to get the bill to final passage. And then the process of implementing the extension in the 50 states begins…

On the bright side, when Congress does finally get the extension done and it is signed into law (most likely during the final week of July), the bill is will allow for benefits to be paid back retroactively to everyone who has been cut off since they expired on June 2nd. By the end of July, 3.2 million unemployed Americans will have had their benefits cut off prematurely due to the Senate stalemate.

I have emailed Cornyn more than once and it appears this Facebook thing is just another stall to buy him time before his next VACATION!!! I will not join FACEBOOK just to be jilted by a POLITICIAN!!! I am sorry I am a decent person who does not use foul language but he is a foul POLITICIAN who has joined the ranks to jilt the American people. Cornyn could do the RIGHT THING on his own, he ignored my email pleas I don’t seek why he would pay attention to a FACEBOOK plea!

What’s the damn point? I think it’s obvious these guys don’t actually plan to pass the bill. It’s just all been fog and mirrors to keep America in limbo so we aren’t out in Revolution as we speak. The U.S. Government has definitely been hijacked by a few very powerful banks who run the Federal Reserve, which is NOT Federal. It is plainly obvious these guys have all been bought and paid for, and the Fascist States of America is already well established at this point. Good thing we wasted our last 20 years worrying about what celebrities were doing and who won the World Series/Superbowl. Maybe you fellow unemployed will finally WAKE THE FUCK UP and stop thinking Democrat/Republican and just VOTE ANY INCUMBENT OUT they are most assuredly corrupted if they are already in office.

We cannot afford to think like that regardless of the circumstance. We have to fight with our intellect unless someones going to volunteer to go postal in Congress.

Thank you Donny Shaw for keeping us updated.

Now… is it next week for sure? My husband says Im not allowed to read anymore on what is happening because it just upsets me. I am trying to keep it together and go to my business classes and look for work. Im trying to keep myself busy in hopes of not becomng anymore bogged down from the stress than I already am.

Question for Donny Shaw…do you share any of the pleas for help from this web site? What else can a common person do to help this along?(if there is anything)

  • bingabrown 07/12/2010 1:22pm

Write your senator and tell him/her to lean on Gov. Manchin to make an appointment fast. There’s gotta be a short list. He wants to join their club — they should make sure he knows the rules. Tell your senator they are either on your side or Manchin’s.

When you guys say your prayers at the beginning of you congress sessions for God to guide you in the right direction? Please Lord give one of the republicans the brains to do the right thing and vote for the unemployment extension. Before everyone looses everything.

  • Jonapoo4u 07/12/2010 1:31pm

i was just watching the ed show fired up and they had a rep up there saying the american people will know who obstructed UI and american growth. Personally me i think republican should be fired or made to live with us inpovernized people.4 million 99ers wont get anything and 3.2 million people there benifits lapsed and dems cant do anything. This is all to show obama as a failed president…but u guys got to make sure people remember this when election day comes that it was the "no"wing that made things like this

  • pissedamerican 07/12/2010 1:44pm

A BUNSH OF ASS HOLES IN OFFICE!!!! When November comes, I hope we all vote them out! This has gong on too damn long and people such as myself who have always worked are being punished! GOD DOES NOT LIKE UGLY AND BE REST ASSURED THAT HE WILL GET THE GLORY IN THE END.

  • GabeismyAngel 07/12/2010 1:45pm

This is DISGUSTING! How do these fucking people live with themselves knowing more and more Americans are going hungry and losing everything they have. Real smart way to improve our economy. I hope each and everyone of those bastards that voted no goes through their own personal hell where they too will be asking why. No wonder the rest of the world laughs at Americans. Fucking pigs

They won’t go through any hell because these senators have millions of dollars in addition to their salaries. They will never know what financial hell is.

Unless the unemployed raid the houses of their states senator. Then they will know what hell is.

It’s the Democrats screwing everything up. First they can’t come up with a bill everyone will agree to, then we have Ben Nelson and now Manchin. The democrats are the ones that need to be voted out. And the democrats will be. They are all over the news talking about how worried they are that they will be gone in November yet they still pull stupid antics like this? It makes no sense.

This isn’t about pointing fingers or blaming parties. This is pathetic because of the simple fact that AMERICANS in the postion to help want to argue over the same thing your posting instead of worrying about the people.

  • jakj1 07/12/2010 1:46pm

Watching CSPAN and everyone should email Senator Sherrod Brown and thank him for standing up in front of the other Senators and telling them how appauled he is that the UC extenstion is not passed. He really went to bat for the unemployed. By the way the Senate is adjourned until tomorrow morning.

  • PJMac 07/12/2010 1:48pm

Direct your anger toward someone other than Manchin, their vast majority want their benefits restored and Manchin is the best shot.

  • rlaughli 07/12/2010 1:55pm

It will happen by the end of next week. It would happen today if dickhead Reid would just compromise with the Rep. Senator from Florida and pay for just half. He made that offer to Reid last week and Reid turned him down flat.

My brother says that the Republicans do not care about their own parents and grandparents let alone future children. They communicate that they worry about these unborn children inheriting the national debt. They insult our intelligence to think we could believe their concerns. We clearly see their motives that are entirely political and self-serving. Financial experts say you have to stimulate the economy NOW and the debt can be manipulated up or down in the future. But during these once in a hundred years or so events of bad economic times we need to keep the economy going. Shame on them for taking vacations and perks from the budget and turning their backs on the hard working middle class! They could possibly find funding for those hurting if they trim their own salary/perks from the government’s pot and just accept what they receive from the lobbyist and private interests. That is the kind of smart they understand. tsk tsk tsk

  • gantoine 07/12/2010 2:23pm

Hopefully Senator Murray was speaking about bill HR4213 instead of the new bill HR 5618.

  • mhp1776 07/12/2010 2:23pm

This has gotten way out of control. Wish there was a way we could cut off Congress payroll. I live in Texas, which happens to be a red state but I’ve seen more republicans switch over to democrats in the last six months than I have in my entire life. Voting out our senators, Barton and Hutchinson, in November will be a great accomplishment and progress for Texas.

As for the vacations, when does Congress actually work? Where do we go to vote on their salaries? Wish there was a way to eliminate lobbyist.

I worked for 35 years and have never been layed off and every week on my check stub F.I.C.A you know you have seen it on every check stub that money is paid into our goverment just for times like now the unemployed devistation that is tearing our country apart with a vengence! All that money paid in with all the interest added and then we have got to beg for it! Go to to hell and burn you bastards I would’nt piss on your guts if they where on fire! The republicans say they dont want to add to the debt but who spent 3 trillion dollars to fund 2 wars! Sheepole Wake the hell up and punish these sorry assholes and you can do that making sure everyone that voted against the bill does not get reelected in November I say this that if the republicans get the majority of the house and senate you can say goodbye to America as you know it because there will be a civil war here in America that the world has never seen and then we the unemployed will take it from them you know the Robin Hood effect!

  • spiker77 07/12/2010 2:24pm

hey all senators, 700 billion to bailout your buddies, we are the working class of america, we need a little help with stay alive, not getting ahead, just staying alive, they are coming to pick up my cpap and oxygen, as i can longer pay for it because everything else is gone, no more savings, no more 401k, selling off cars , you get the picture yet?? this is happening to millions of us , who are the backbone of this great place, ring a bell yet, the usa??, you make 6 figures, and take more vacations in a year than most of us get in our lifetime, but we still hope, pray , and help our neighbors, friends , kids, grandkids, and now you want to play games with the unemployment benefits,,!!!!!!!, just get the job done, it needs to pass the house and senate on july 13 , no more bs, just get it done , while some can still save their homes, and keep the power on, this is a bigger crisis than the gulf!!!!!
