Dems Will Have 60 Votes for Passing the Unemployment Extension Bill Next Week

July 12, 2010 - by Donny Shaw

Apparently West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin’s chat last night with election attorneys didn’t convince him to go ahead with appointing an interim replacement for Sen. Robert Byrd [D, WV] before the legislature in his state meets on Thursday. Here’s the latest on the situation, from the AP:

West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin says he’ll make a temporary appointment to the late Robert C. Byrd’s Senate seat by Sunday.

Manchin said Monday he could announce his pick as early as Friday.

That means this entire week will go by without any Senate work on the unemployment insurance extension bill unless Sen. Ben Nelson [D, NE] or another Republican changes their position on it. It does sound pretty certain that there will be a replacement for Byrd by the beginning of next week, but, in that case, even under the best-case scenario, it will take the Senate until the end of next week to get the bill to final passage. And then the process of implementing the extension in the 50 states begins…

On the bright side, when Congress does finally get the extension done and it is signed into law (most likely during the final week of July), the bill is will allow for benefits to be paid back retroactively to everyone who has been cut off since they expired on June 2nd. By the end of July, 3.2 million unemployed Americans will have had their benefits cut off prematurely due to the Senate stalemate.

Oprah Show does not do political shows like that. She does not represent to little guy anymore. The show has to stay impartial, and in order to keep getting funding from those large companies that have lavished her with gifts and sponsorship (money). It is how mainstream media works now.
+FOXNEWS hired Glen Beck who is spokesperson for TeaParty. His views are expressed and indirectly support Republican politicians or anyone politician that will help Big Money Industries, and the few Wealthy families get more control of USA.
+CNN is in the same boat as Oprah’s show. The AC360 show is very censored to protect the largest contributors to political parties.

More stalling. Is anyone really surprised? Gee, I wonder what next week’s stall tactics will be. Congress goes on vacation AGAIN on Aug 9th to Sept 10th – a whole month of “Summer District Work Period” before their Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day and Thanksgiving holiday weeks. It’s pretty evident that our Senators DO NOT CARE about the American people or voters. Our representatives do not represent the American people and instead they represent political parties. The parties select puppets who will say or do whatever they’re told to do. Parties get elected, not candidates and they do it by trashing the opposing party instead of on the merit of their own performance. So obviously Congress does not need to address any issues at all. Their job is to compete in a political party popularity contest. My guess is that most of them don’t really know what all the fuss about unemployment and jobs is even about. I no longer have faith in Congress doing anything but stalling.

Chris51, dude you are on it!!!!! I`m very impressed, question is WHAT YA GONNA DO? Are you a leader, or an agitator to the cause?

Neither. A hard working American who loves this country, but is sad to see what has happen to our USA because of greed. It isn’t what our founding fathers had in mind. It’s shameful.

Chris51 it`s exactly what they knew would happen, and they tried their best in their wording of our constitution to avoid it. We not only need a Revolution, we need to evolve into the 21st. century, WE NEED AN EVOLUTION!! everything you speak of points to an antiquated system taking us backwards in time. The KNUCKLE-DRAGGERS want to keep us in the past, where they exploit the sheep!!!!! And thanks to a eight year campaign of fear, the sheep have scattered, and are in need of a leader!!!

My phone is about to get cut off. If I get a call back for a job, how are they supposed to reach me?

Also, even if this thing does get passed, I will have so many late fees to make up for late payments, I’ll be further in the hole. There should be an additional sorry-for-stalling-and-aggravating-an-already-unbearable situation credit tacked on to each retroactive unemployment benefit payment.

This is complete BS. Why won’t these republicans just stop with the filibusters so we don’t have to wait for Byrd’s interim replacement????

Wunderwomin, THINK!!!! Does Manchin want a competitor he can`t beat come election time? He said he wants the senate seat, the problem is finding a politician who`s not ambitious…… Good Luck !!!!!!

Hi seanurse, Don’t worry. I’m not giving up on providing updates on the unemployment bill. It’s true that I have other areas of work to attend to in maintaining this website, but I still have an eye to what’s happening around this bill. For now, this post is still relevant. A replacement for Byrd will be announced between Friday and Sunday, and they should be seated in the Senate by Monday. Also be sure to check the community at for updates and good links. Click “OpenCongress + Others” to see all the content there. Hang in there.

  • firestorm145 07/13/2010 9:57am

You need to keep going and trying. Wage a protest!!! Don’t give up!!!!!!!!!! I too am unemployed and have been without benefits since June. Push as hard as you can Push the president, push the senate march around the senate and the white house and protest. Go for the whole ball of wax!!!!!!!!! Leave nothing ou even though you are so tired of all the crap

  • illucy 07/13/2010 9:58am

And we’re sending BILLION’s monthly to Afghanistan which is not paid for and some of the money is going into enemey hands.

If the Republicans want something it doesn’t have to be paid for. This unemployment bill is not passed because the Republicans answer to the HAVES and we’re the HAVE NOTS. They listen to big Oil Companies, Insurance Companies & Wall Street. People like us don’t typically vote for them so they’re not going to care about the HAVE NOTS.

There is not middle class anymore… just your struggling American and the powerfull who buy Congress. Is it any wonder we have nothing?

  • bigbufordsdad 07/13/2010 9:58am

glen beck is an idiot and cant manage a bowel movement let alone a political movement.

here are a few ideas for all of us who feel lost and dont know what to do:
get a TRACFONE. there is no contract and wont be shut off as long as you have minutes. only use it for job search and emergencies.
get a library card. they are usually free and allow you access to the internet.
find food. if you look around in nature you can find fruits and vegetables growing wild all over the place. i personally have about 12lbs of mulberries in my freezer because i cant afford sweets right now.
the only option at this point is survival. we unemployed have nothing but time on our hands. as much as it sucks we need to use it wisely. i too will be homeless again very soon if this doesnt pass. i had to sell 2 guitars and a training pistol just to pay my rent this month. i may not have stuff, but i still have my health, my sanity, and my dog. good luck to all and dont kill yourselves.

Typing nasty emails are not going to do anything. All they have to do is filter them in some kind of way. NOTHING SHORT OF PHYSICAL ACTION will make a difference….and that will only work if EVERYONE does it(or at least a representative from each household). An email won’t do anything because all they have to do is look away! They need something that they cannot ignore.
