Lance was born June 25, 1952. He holds a B.A. from Lehigh University, a J.D. from Vanderbilt University Law School and an M.P.A. from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University. Leonard Lance has faced persistent rumors about his sexuality; suspicions about Lance being gay continue despite his opposition to gay rights. Lance was elected to the New Jersey State Senate in 2001 and re-elected in 2003 and 2007.
